‘가수저라’, 조선 연행사의 입맛을 사로잡다

국문 초록

1720년 李器之(1690-1722)는 아버지인 正使 李頤命(1658-1722)의 자제군관 신분으로 북경을 방문하였고, 천주당을 방문하여 그곳에 있던 예수회 소속 선교사인 蘇霖(1656-1736/ Joseph Surez), 費隱(1673-1743/ Xavier-Ehrenbert Fridelli) 등과 교류하였다. 이기지는 북경에 있는 1720년 9월 18일부터 북경을 떠나는 1720년 11월 14일까지 북경 소재 천주당 중 南唐, 東堂, 北堂을 합쳐 모두 아홉 차례에 걸쳐 방문하고 서양 선교사들과 교류를 한다. 서양 선교사들도 이기지 일행의 숙소인 法華寺를 9월 29일, 10월 20일, 10월 24일에 걸쳐 세 차례 방문하였는데, 이때마다 모두 선물을 주고받았고, 직접 만나지 못하는 상황이면 심부름꾼을 통해 선물과 편지를 주고받았다. 이기지는 그의 《一菴燕記》에 당시 서양 선교사가 준 선물과 조선 연행사들이 준 선물을 자세하게 기록하였다. 서양 선교사는 이기지 일행에게 우호적이었는데, 이에 이기지 일행이 천주당을 방문하면 차나 과일 같은 것은 물론 포도주와 카스텔라 같이 조선 연행사들이 처음 맛보는 서양 먹거리를 제공하기도 하였다. 처음 맛본 카스텔라의 맛에 빠진 이기지와 연행사들은 카스텔라 제조법을 묻고, 선물 받은 카스텔라를 조선에 보내기도 하였다. 이 논문에서는 조선 연행사와 서양 선교사들이 만났을 때 주고받은 선물 물목과 접대한 음식들을 정리 소개하고, 특히 그들의 입맛을 사로잡은 카스텔라 관련 연행록과 조선 문헌 기록을 집중적으로 살펴본다.

영문 초록

In 1720, Yi, Ki-Ji(1690-1722) traveled to Beijing as a vassal of his father, YI, Yi-Myeong(1658-1722), and visited the Catholic Church to interact with Jesuit missionaries, such as Joseph Suarez and Xavier-Ehrenbert Fridelli. Between September 18, 1720, when he arrived in Beijing, and November 14, 1720, when he left Beijing, YI, Ki-Ji visited the Catholic churches in Beijing nine times, including the South Church, the East Church, and the North Church, and interacted with Western missionaries. The Western missionaries also visited Yi, Ki-Ji's lodging, Fahua Temple, three times on September 29, October 20, and October 24, and each time they exchanged gifts and, when they could not meet in person, sent gifts and letters through an errand boy. In his YIlahm Yeongi, he recorded in detail the gifts given by the Western missionaries and the gifts given by Joseon emissaries. The Western missionaries were friendly to YI, Ki-ji and his group, and when they visited the Catholic Church, they offered them tea and fruit, as well as wine and western foods Joseon people had never tasted before, such as castella. After falling in love with the flavor of castella for the first time, YI, Ki-Ji and his traveling companions asked how to make castella and sent it back to Joseon. This paper summarizes the gift items and foods that were exchanged between Joseon diplomats and Western missionaries when they met, and focuses on the travel logs and Korean documents related to castella that captured their taste buds.
