국문 초록

보편교회와 지역교회의 문헌에서는 교리교사에 대한 신원과 교리교사가 지녀야 할 자질에 대하여 명확하게 언급하고 있다. 이를 바탕으로 각 지역교회는 교리교사를 양성하기 위한 다양한 노력을 기울인다. 그럼에도 불구하고 여전히 주일학교 교리교사의 신원과 자질이 주일학교 활성화를 위하여 극복해야 할 도전으로 남아 있는 것은 이에 대한 새로운 접근과 이해를 필요로 하고 있다. 이 같은 배경에서, 본 연구는 교리교사의 신원과 자질은 무엇이며, 현장에서 활동하는 교리교사는 이에 대하여 어떻게 인식하고 있는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 그리고 이를 위하여 A교구의 교리교사 18명을 대상으로 사례연구를 진행 하였다. 연구 결과, ‘평신도로서 교리교사,’ ‘교리교사의 존재 이유인 학생,’ ‘연대하는 교리교사,’ ‘교리교사의 신원과 역할의 도전들’이라는 4가지 범주로 드러나는 교리교사의 신원과 역할과 관련한 인식 요인들을 살펴 볼 수 있었다. 교리교사는 자신의 신원과 역할에 대하여 충분히 인식하고 있었으며, 학생은 교리교사의 신원과 역할에 의미를 부여하는 중요한 대상이었다. 또한, 교리교사는 동료 교리교사의 연대를 통하여 자신의 신원과 역할을 확고히 하는 데 도움을 얻고 있었다. 반면, 교리교사는 자신의 신원과 역할을 지속시키는 데 다양한 도전(공동체 구성원과의 관계, 사회적 환경, 직무 수행)들에 직면하고 있었다. 이러한 연구 결과는 교회 공동체가 교리교사의 고유성을 인정하는 의식의 전환을 요구할 뿐 아니라, 그들의 신원과 역할을 발전시키기 위한 체계적인 접근이 필요함을 제안하고 있다.

영문 초록

The documents, whether the universal church or local church, clearly address the identity and role of catechists. Based on the documents, various attempts have been made to provide formation programs for the catechists in the local church. Despite such efforts, the identity and role of catechists are regarded as a challenge that hinders animation of Sunday schools in the church. In this context, this study aims to explore the identity and role of catechists and how they perceive these characteristics within their job performance. Thus, the study employs a qualitative case study method by collecting data through interviews from 18 catechists affiliated with the Diocese of A. The findings revealed four distinct categories: “catechists as lay Christians,” which highlights their role as believers; “students as the purpose of their mission,” which builds their identity as catechists; “solidarity among catechists,” which helps them enhance the identity and role through collaboration and support among fellow catechists. However, the study also found that they face various challenges in maintaining their identity and role, such as the relationships among church community members, the social environment, and their job performance. These findings indicate that it is necessary for the church community to recognize and appreciate the unique role of catechists by reframing their perception of them. Additionally, the community should adopt a systemic approach to amplify and strengthen the identity an role of catechists.
