뮤지컬 <헤어스프레이>의 극과 음악의 동시대성

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 뮤지컬 <헤어스프레이>에 나타난 극적 환경과 음악의 동시대성을 반영하는 요소들과, ‘Run and Tell That’을 통해 인물을 나타내는 극적·음악적 표현 기법을 고찰하였다. 연구를 위한 분석 방법으로 작품의 텍스트분석을 통한 질적 연구방법을 활용하였으며 저서, 논문, 온·오프라인 자료 등을 수집하여 연구 설계를 진행하였다. 이를 통해 이 작품이 극적 메시지를 전달하기 위한 음악적 기능으로 시대 배경의 재현, 사회적 메시지 전달, 인물의 감정이나 의도를 전달, 오락성 전달 등의 역할을 하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 특히, <헤어스프레이> 는 1960년대 스타일의 음악을 사용함으로써 그 시대 배경을 재현하였는데, 극중 씨위드의 ‘Run and Tell That’ 은 작품의 주요 주제인 인종차별에 대해 흑인의 자부심과 가치를 주장하며 차별에 대해 저항하는 메시지를 던진다. 이를 강조하기 위해 블루스 스케일과 흑인을 대표 하는 음악 스타일인 리듬 앤 블루스 장르 및 스캣 창법을 사용하였는데 이는 씨위드의 낙천적이며 밝은 성격을 부각시키고 그를 다음 흑인 세대의 상징적 캐릭터로 강조하는 전략적 기법으로 사용되었음을 알 수 있다. 본연구를 통해 뮤지컬 장르의 특징인 동시대성 반영이라는 고유의 가치를 인식하고 발전시킬 수 있도록 후속 연구에 대한 초석이 되길 기대한다.

영문 초록

This study examined the elements that reflect the contemporaneity of the dramatic circumstances and music in the musical , and the dramatic and musical expression techniques that represent the characters through 'Run and Tell That'. As an analysis method for the study, a qualitative research method was utilized through textual analysis of the work, and a research design was conducted by collecting books, papers, and online and offline materials. Through this, we found that the musical functions of these works to convey dramatic messages include reproducing the period background, conveying social messages, conveying characters' feelings and intentions, and conveying entertainment. In particular, reproduces the period background by using 1960s-style music, and Seaweed's ‘Run and Tell That’ in the play throws out a message to resist discrimination by claiming black pride and value against racism, which is the main theme of the work. To emphasize this, the use of the blues scale and the rhythm and blues genre, amusical style representative of blacks, as well as the use of scat singing is a strategic technique that emphasizes Seaweed's optimistic and bright personality and highlights him as an iconic character of the next black generation. It is hoped that this study will serve as a foundation for further research to recognize and develop the inherent value of reflecting contemporaneity as a characteristic of the musical genre.
