조선 백자의 현대적 표현과 재해석에 관한 연구

국문 초록

사람들은 ‘전통’에서 여러 역사적·문화적 이미지와 요소들을 떠올린다. 그 중 조선시대를 대표하는 여러 문화 요소 중 하나로 조선 백자가 있으며, 현대 도예계 에서도 전통과 조선 백자는 핵심적인 주제로 자리하고 있다. 일제강점기와 한국전쟁을 거치며 그 맥이 끊길뻔 했던 우리 전통의 조선 백자를 부흥시키기 위한 움직임이 해방 이후부터 차차 나타나기 시작하였고, 2000년대부터 본격화되어 현재까지 계속되고 있다. 전통이 단순히 재현이나 계승할 요소로서가 아니라, 무한한 영감의 원천으로 작용하며 도예가들의 창작의 밑거름이 되고 있는 상황이다. 본 연구에서는 조선 백자에 담긴 미의식과 백자를 현대적으로 재해석하여 표현한 도예작품들을 살펴보고, 현대 도예계에서 조선 백자가 가지는 가치와 의미를 모색하는 데 연구의 목적이 있다. 한국미의 정수로 여 겨지며 ‘자연스러움’, ‘넉넉함’, ‘간결함’ 등의 미적 특성을 가진 조선 백자는 작가의 조형언어를 표현하기 위한 소재로서 사용되고 있다. 전통을 기반으로 제작된 현 시대의 도예작품들이 같은 조선 백자를 재해석 하였지만 각각 어떤 창작의도를 토대로 제작되었고, 그 표현이 작가마다 어떻게 다르게 나타나는지를 살펴 봄으로써 연구를 통해 오늘날 조선 백자가 많이 재해 석되고 있는 현상과 이유를 되짚어본다. 따라서 본 연구는 조선 백자를 현대적 표현으로 재해 석한 작가를 선정하여 분석하고 그 표현적 특징을 크게 형태, 재료, 장식 3가지 유형으로 분류하여 고찰한 다. 연구 결과, 3가지 표현 유형 중 장식적 표현이 가장 많이 사용되고 있었다. 작품 분석을 통해 전통에서 차용한 단순한 형태를 바탕으로 삼았을 때 새로운 시각적 인상과 표현의 내용 전달 효과를 극대화할 수 있다는 결론을 도출하였다. 2000년대 이후 현대적으로 재해석된 도예작품과 표현을 비교·분석함으로써 향후 도예가들의 창작에 기여하 고자 하며, 현대 도예계에서 조선 백자와 전통이 가진 의미, 앞으로의 발전가능성과 확장성, 중요성을 확인할수 있었다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

Tradition and Joseon white porcelain are important topics in the contemporary ceramic art world. The movement to revive the Korean traditional white porcelain, which was almost cut off through Japanese colonial era and the Kore an War, began to be seen little by little after liberation, a nd has been in full swing since the 2000s and continues to this day. Tradition is not just an element to be reprod uced or inherited, but serves as a source of infinite inspiration and is the basis for the creation of contemporary ce ramic artists. The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristic s of Joseon white porcelain and contemporary ceramic wo rks that reinterpreted it, and to seek the value and meani ng of Joseon white porcelain in the contemporary ceramic art world. Joseon white porcelain, which is considered the essence of Korean beauty and has aesthetic characteristics such as ‘naturalness’, ‘generosity’, and ‘simplicity’, is use d as a material to express the artist's formative language. Contemporary ceramic works based on tradition reinterpret ed the same Joseon white porcelain, but by examining ho w each artist appears differently and with what creative i ntentions they were produced, we look back on the pheno menon and reason why many Joseon white porcelain are reinterpreted today. Therefore, this study selects and analyzes artists who reint erpret Joseon white porcelain and considers its expressive characteristics by classifying them into three types: form, material, and decoration. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that decorative expressions were used the most among the three types of expressions. Since the 2000s, it is meaningful in that it has been able to confirm the meaning, future development, scalability, a nd importance of Joseon white porcelain and tradition in the contemporary ceramic art world by comparing and an alyzing contemporary ceramic works and artists' creative i ntentions and expression techniques.
