국문 초록

1960~1980년대의 군사정권시기에 정치권력은 엄격한 검열체제를 구축하였다. 이 시기에 군사정부가 자행했던 언론과 문화예술분야에 대한 통제 및 그와 관련된 정치적 맥락을 탐구한 기존의 연구가 더러 있었으나, 문학검열에 대한 문학단체의 저항운동과 그 정치적 기능에 대해 깊이 있게 분석한 연구는 드물다. 이에 본 연구는 당시 문학공동체와 그들의 의식을 반영한 문학텍스트의 정치적 영향에 대해 살펴보고, 아울러 문학검열과 언론검열 간의 상호작용에 초점을 맞춰 기존의 제한된 논의를 확장하고자 했다. 구체적으로, 본 연구는 시민사회와 검열에 대한 이론을 바탕으로 해당 시기의 문학공동체가 어떻게 텍스트에 사회적 가치를 부여하고 독자들의 규범 형성에 영향을 미쳤는지를 탐구하였다. 군사정권시대의 민주화운동에 관한 기록물과 관련 문헌 및 언론기사 분석을 토대로 문학공동체의 정치적 영향력과 관련한 함의를 크게 세 가지로 도출하였다. 첫째, 권위주의 정권이 문단 내에서 인정받거나 영향력이 강한 인물을 침묵시키기 위해 박해를 가할 경우 오히려 문학공동체의 저항을 야기하여 정치적 반대 의견을 표출할 수 있는 통로가 활성화될 수 있다. 둘째, 문학공동체로부터 가치와 권위를 인정받는 인물은 독자와 출판사를 대표하여 종교단체나 학생운동단체 등 다른 시민사회 그룹과 동맹을 형성하는 경향이 있으며, 이러한 시민사회 동맹은 민주화운동의 촉진제가 될 수 있다. 셋째, 문학공동체는 정부의 권위주의적 통제에 저항하는 집단적이고 조직화된 행동을 고무하고 촉진할 수 있다. 이 같은 시사점을 토대로 권위주의적 정치권력과 대항적 시민사회의 역학관계에 대해 논의하고, 본 연구를 보완할 후속연구의 방향성을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

During the military governments of the 1960s-1980s, the South Korean state established a strict censorship regime. While some existing studies broadly examine censorship and civil society under authoritarian regimes, few studies theorize how literary censorship differs from censorship of reportage and how literary communities function uniquely as a civil society group under authoritarian regimes. The present study aims to examine the political function of literary communities and the interaction between literary censorship and media censorship. Drawing on theories of civil society and censorship, this study explores how literary communities ascribed social values to texts and shaped readers' norms. Analyzing existing theory and news archives from the period, this study drew three main implications for the political role of literary communities. First, when authoritarian regimes use persecution to silence recognized or influential figures within literary communities, they may activate channels for political dissent. As such, censorship becomes costly for the state. Second, figures recognized within literary communities may forge alliances with other civil society groups, such as religious and student activists, on behalf of readers and publishers. Such civil society alliances strengthen pro-democracy movements. Third, literary communities can facilitate collective and organized action to resist the authoritarian state. Based on the above findings, this study discussed the dynamics of authoritarian political power and oppositional civil society from a broader perspective and suggested several directions for further research to complement the present study.
