올림조와 내림조는 상반되는 감각을 유발하는가?

국문 초록

음악이 특정한 감각을 불러일으키는 원인은 음악의 선율, 리듬, 화성, 조성, 음색, 빠르기 등 매우 다양하며 복합적으로 결부되어 있다. 그 중에서도 특히 조성은 한 작품의 전체적인 분위기 와 음악적 문맥을 형성하는 중요한 요인 중 하나로, 대부분의 선행 연구들은 장조와 단조가 각각 긍정적이고 부정적인 감정이나 감각을 유발한다는 결과를 보고하였다. 하지만 조성은 올림조와 내림조의 두 그룹으로도 분류될 수 있는데, 5도권(circle of fifth)에서 두 조성이 5도 상행 및 하행 간격으로 만들어지며 이 음정 간격이 긴장과 이완을 동반한다는 점은 두 종류의 조성이 반대 감각을 유발할 수 있는 가능성을 보여준다. 따라서 30명의 음악전공자에게 다양한 모차르트 피 아노 소나타의 8마디를 모든 조성 및 이명동음 조성으로 이조하여 제시한 후, 밝기, 따뜻함, 모양 에 대한 감각을 평가하도록 요청하였고, 이를 조성의 음고(pitch)에 내재된 교차감각 (crossmodal) 영향과 이명동음조(enharmonic key) 쌍에 대한 분석으로 비교하였다. 결과는 올림 조가 보다 밝고, 차갑고, 뾰족하게, 내림조가 보다 어둡고, 따뜻하고, 평평하게 평가되었음을 보여 주었고, 이는 같은 음악일지라도 조성이 올림조 계열인지 내림조 계열인지에 따라 다른 감각을 유도할 수 있음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

A wide spectrum of elements in music such as pitch contours, rhythm, harmony, tempo, and dynamics affect senses that the music evokes. In particular, the musical key has been considered a crucial attribute in determining the overall atmosphere of music. Previous studies have shown that the major key is related to brightness and happiness, while the minor key is related to darkness and sadness. However, keys also can be subdivided into sharp (#) keys and flat (b) keys. Sharp and flat keys are constructed in opposite directions in the circle of fifths, which is known to be musically associated with tension and relaxation. Thus, sharp and flat keys are likely to cause opposing sensory perceptions in music. Based on these hypotheses, we investigated whether sharp and flat keys of music indeed have different effects on the perception of three senses: brightness, warmth, and sharpness. A total of 30 musicians (Mage= 22, Mtrainingyears = 8.4) responded to their perceived senses after listening to Mozart’s piano sonatas where the key is transposed to all keys. The result shows that perceived sensory scores for sharp and flat keys are significantly different in all three senses. This suggests that even with the same music, we might perceive different senses depending on whether the key is sharp or flat.
