과학으로 음악적 숭고를 규명하려면?

국문 초록

본고는 음악에서의 숭고를 두려움의 기제(버크의 숭고개념)로 규명하고자 하는 음악인지과학의 방법론을 인문학적인 관점에서 비판적으로 고찰한다. 먼저, 18-19세기 음악관련 간행물과 서적에 등장하는 ‘숭고’라는 개념을 분석함으로써, 음악에서의 숭고가 버크의 숭고개념보다 넓은스펙트럼을 아우르고 있었음을 밝히고, ‘숭고’가 그와 같이 다층적인 의미를 지니게 된 경위를미학사적 관점에서 살핀다. (숭고의 미학적 개념은 역사적인 변천을 통해, 그리스어 명사 ὕψους 에서 비롯된 ‘높음’이라는 사전적 의미, 디오니소스적인 파토스와 탈아의 경지, 라틴어 형용사sublīmis로 말미암은 천상의 고귀한 것, 그리고 프랑스 고전주의의 숭고와 연결되는 영웅적인위대함, 버크의 숭고와 연결되는 두려움의 계기, 칸트의 숭고로부터 말미암은 초월성을 아우르는다층적인 개념으로 팽창하였다.) 다음으로, 숭고를 대상의 성질이 아닌 주체의 마음에 속한 것으로 보는 칸트의 숭고 개념을 통해, 숭고가 유한과 무한을 융합하는 수단으로서의 인식론적 함의를 갖게 되었고, 이것이 음악에‘철학에 버금가는 위상’을 부여하는 강한 동력이 되었음을 살핀다. 숭고개념이 아우르는 ‘다층적인 의미’와 숭고의 핵심적인 개념이 바탕으로 하고 있는 ‘주관적인관점’을 바탕으로 하여, 본고는 인지과학의 숭고이론에 대한 방법론에 변화가 필요하다는 것을주장한다. 첫째는, 인지과학의 숭고연구가 두려움의 기제를 벗어나 기쁨, 슬픔, 경이와 같은 다양하고 복잡한 감정에 대한 연구로 그 폭을 넓혀야 한다는 것이고, 둘째는 인지과학의 숭고연구가음악적 특질에 대한 인간의 반응을 살피는 평면적인 실험모델을 벗어나 감상 주체의 개별성과특수성을 고려하는 방향으로 선회하여야 한다는 것이다.

영문 초록

Most studies in music cognitive science have a tendency to examine the sublime in the mechanism of fear, relating to Edmund Burke’s theory on the sublime. This paper critically examines the current methodology of studies in music cognitive science on the sublime through aesthetic and philosophical perspectives. Firstly, the paper shows the various meanings of ‘sublime’ by analyzing several English and German historical documents on music in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and traces the origin of each meaning. (The aesthetic notion of sublime covers the Dionysian pathos of the Greek ὕψους, the celestial nobility of the Latin sublīmis, the heroic majesty of French Classicism, the terror and pain of Burke’s view, and the transcendence of Kant’s.) Secondly, in Kant’s perspective, the sublime become a subjective experience that happens within one’s mind, which directly contradicts Burke’s more objective approach. Through this inward focus, the sublime becomes an epistemological pathway to integrate the finite and the infinite, elevating absolute music to the position of philosophy and religion in the Romantic period. It is a crucial turning point in the history of music. Therefore, this paper argues that studies in music cognitive science need to be redirected toward the following two principles: 1) One must examine various emotions in the context of the sublime, in addition to the mechanism of fear, and 2) One must examine the mechanism of the sublime from a subjective point of view, focusing on the listener’s individuality and experience.
