문화적 정체성과 혼종성의 관점으로 본 탄둔의 ≪진시황≫

국문 초록

중국 출신 작곡가 탄둔(Tan Dun, 1957- )은 2006년 메트로폴리탄 오페라의 위촉으로 오페라≪진시황≫(The First Emperor)을 초연했다. ≪진시황≫은 중국의 첫 번째 황제인 진시황의 국가를 향한 갈망과 그 과정에서 나타나는 비극적인 사랑, 희생, 배반 등을 그려낸 작품이며, 아시아작곡가의 작품으로 메트로폴리탄 오페라단의 위촉을 받아 세계 초연된 첫 번째 오페라이다. 뿐만아니라 동양과 서양의 음악적 전통을 통합해 새로운 언어를 만드는 탄둔의 탐구를 담고 있는작품답게 중국 고대음악, 경극, 서양 오페라, 실험적 아방가르드 등의 문화적 요소들이 나타나는것이 특징이다. 탄둔은 ‘음악 대위들’과 ‘1+1=1’의 철학을 통해 이중문화적 맥락을 설정하고, 동서양의 문화적 차이와 유사성에 대해 탐구했다. 특히 문화적 차이에 대한 탐구는 차이의 병치, 차이의 간극을 동양적인 방법으로 채우거나 차이를 유지하되 중국의 문화적 요소를 강조하는 양상으로 나타났다. 더불어 국가를 향한 진시황의 고뇌는 새로운 음악 어법에 대한 탄둔의 고민이투영된 것으로 보이는데, 탄둔은 그에 대한 대답으로 ≪진시황≫ 속에 자신의 출생지인 후난성의무속의례 음악을 등장시켰다. 이러한 문화 혼종화 전략으로 미루어볼 때 ≪진시황≫은 ‘혼종적인간’ 탄둔의 ‘이중의식’이 발현된 것이자 세계시민적 정체성과 (신)민족주의자적 정체성 사이의고민이 담긴 작품이라고 할 수 있겠다.

영문 초록

Tan Dun (1957-), a Chinese-born composer, premiered the opera The First Emperor in 2006, commissioned by Metropolitan Opera. The First Emperor is a work that depicts the craving for the national anthem (Qin Song) of Qin Shi Huang, who is the first emperor of China, and the tragic love, sacrifice and betrayal in the process. Also, it is the first opera of an Asian composer which had a world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera Theater. Moreover, it is characterized by the cultural elements such as Chinese ancient music, Peking opera, Western classical opera, and experimental Avant-garde, as well as the search for creating a new language of Tan, which integrates Eastern and Western musical traditions. Tan set up a bi-cultural context through the philosophy of ‘music counterpoint(s)’ and ‘1+1=1’ and explored the cultural differences and similarities of the East and West. In particular, the inquiry into cultural differences appeared to place in juxtaposition with differences, to fill the gap of differences with oriental methods, or to maintain the differences but to emphasize the cultural elements of China. In addition, the anguish of the Qin Shi Huang toward the national anthem seems to reflect the trouble of Tan about a new musical language. In answer to that, Tan introduced the music of shamanistic ritual of Hunan province of his birth place in The First Emperor. As a result of this strategies of cultural hybridity, The First Emperor is the work of the ‘double-consciousness’ of ‘hybrid human’(Tan Dun), the worry between the identity of the global citizen and the neo-nationalist.
