국문 초록

《오르도 비르투툼》(Ordo Virtutum)은 힐데가르트 폰 빙엔(Hildegard von Bingen, 1098~1179)이 작곡한 대규모 음악 작품이다. 도덕극인 이 작품은 덕행들이 악마와 싸워 죄에 빠진 영혼을 구하는 내용을 담고 있다. ‘겸손’을 포함한 17개의 덕행들은 82개의 단선율로노래하고, 조화로운 선율을 노래할 수 없는 ‘악마’는 텍스트만으로 거칠게 낭송한다. 각 악곡에서 텍스트의 의미와 구조는 선율에 반영되며, 힘차게 상행하는 도약 음형과 선율의 유사반복은 음향적 통일성을 이루어 낸다. 12세기 작곡가 힐데가르트의 음악은 당대에 분명 가치가 있었다. 기록이 쉽지 않은 시대에 필사자들이 공들여 작업을 해 두었다는 사실이 그것을 방증한다. 《오르도 비르투툼》의재조명 된 가치는 지금 시대에도 유효한 주제와 연주 가능한 음악이라는 것에 있다. 근대를지나는 동안 역사가 잊고 있던 12세기의 인물과 그 작품을 비추는 작업이 어두운 중세 이미지의 조도(照度)를 높여줄 것이다.

영문 초록

Ordo Virtutum is a large-scale musical work composed by Hildegard von Bingen(1098-1179). Known as a morality play, it describes the effort of virtutes that fight against the diabolus and finally save the anima from the sins. 17 virtutes, including humilitas, sing in 82 monophonic melodies, whereas the diabolus recites roughly only with the text because it cannot sing the harmonious melody. At each piece, the text’s meaning and its structure are reflected on the melody. The figuration featuring ascending leaps and similarly repeated melodies create the unity of sounds. The music of Hildegard von Bingen, a composer of the twelfth century, was undeniably valued at the time. Elaborate music manuscripts by professional scribes proves it, as transcribing music was not an easy task in the medieval period. The rediscovered value of Ordo Virtutum lies on the fact that its theme is still valid and contemporary and the music can still be played today. The effort to shed light on this long-forgotten musician and her works from the twelfth century will brighten up the dark image of medieval times.
