≪메피스토 왈츠≫에 반영된 에로티시즘과 악마주의

국문 초록

본 연구는 웬코스(Paul Wendkos) 감독의 공포영화 『메피스토 왈츠』(Mephisto Waltz, 1971)에 나타나는 음악의 다차원적 상징성을 탐구하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 음악을 맡은 골드스미스(Jerry Goldsmith, 1929~2004)는 리스트(Franz Liszt, 1811~1886)의 ≪메피스토 왈츠≫를 인용하여 다양한 방식으로 변형하고 재구성함으로써 영화의 극적인 효과와 치밀한 내러티브 전개를 성취하였다. 필자는 세 개의 다른 매체 즉, 레나우의 시, 리스트의 음악, 웬코스/골드스미스의 영화 간 의미적 매핑에 집중함으로써, 영화 『메피스토 왈츠』가선행된 두 매체인 시와 음악으로부터 받은 악마주의(diabolism)와 에로티시즘(eroticism)을어떠한 방식으로 강화하고, 재구성하는지 탐구하였다. 레나우의 시에 나타나는 두 인물 ‘파우스트’와 ‘메피스토’ 간의 대립을 악곡의 성격과 분위기, 조성 등의 대비로 표현한 리스트의 ≪메피스토 왈츠≫와 이를 발췌하여 다양한 방식으로 변형하여 자신의 음악 속에 녹여낸 골드스미스의 사운드트랙에서 ‘레나우’와 ‘리스트’가어떤 방식으로 변용(變容)되어 영화의 내러티브를 강화하고 때로는 역설(paradox)을 창출해내는지 주목하였다. 라킨(David Larkin)이 소개한, 작품에 대한 두 개의 청취를 비교·소개하는 방식을 통해 레나우의 시와 리스트의 음악 간의 의미 변환을 탐구한 후, 골드스미스의음악 작업에 주목하여 리스트 음악이 사용된 몇몇 시퀀스들에서 내재한 메타포들을 읽어내었다. 메피스토의 조율을 포함하는 도발적인 오프닝, 인간의 갈등과 욕망을 표현하는 파우스트 주제, 악마성의 발현을 의미하는 메피스토 주제를 다양한 방식으로 변형하여 인용함으로써 영화의 주제인 인간의 욕망이 혼돈, 집착, 유희로 분화되며 만들어낸 의미들에 대해 살폈다.

영문 초록

The goal of this paper is to explore symbolistic meanings of music as seen in the surrealistic horror film Mephisto Waltz by Paul Wendkos based on Fred Stewart’s novel of the same name. Jerry Goldsmith who wrote music for the film has achieved both the refined narrative deployment and dramatic effects arousing the eerie and supernatural mood, by quoting and manipulating thematic materials as a symbolic device leading to the plot from Ferenc Liszt’s virtuosic piano piece Mephisto Waltz. We have explored how Goldsmith reinforced and reconstructed diverse images based on diabolism and eroticism originated from the two media poem and music, by paying attention to mapping of meanings between Lenau’s poem, Liszt’s music, and his film music. By comparing two different ways of hearing Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz introduced in David Larkin’s recent research, we observed a transvaluation between Lenau and Liszt and then focused on Goldsmith’s compositional process, shedding light on metaphors latent in selected sequences that contain Liszt’s music. We illuminated and further generated musical connotations encapsulated by Goldsmith who had transformed and paraphrased in various and audacious ways the provocative opening, Faust theme expressing the human’s fervent lust, and Mephisto theme which symbolizes the diabolic revelation.
