국문 초록

본 논문에서는 역사적 정보에 근거한 분석을 통해 19세기 당시 사변적 음악이론이 작곡실제에 어떻게 반영되었는지 논의된다. 이를 위해 브람스와 실제 교류가 있었던 하우프트만, 리만 등의 음악학자들의 이론과 사상이 소개되고 이와 관련된 브람스의 작품의 예들을 살펴본다. 이 연구 과정을 통하여 이론적 사상이 작곡가에게 미학적으로 어떻게 수용되고 음악작품 창작에 어떻게 적용되는지 규명된다. 브람스의 클라리넷 소나타 제1번 op. 120-1을 비롯한 후기 음악작품에서 화성의 본질을 다루는 이원론적·대칭적 사상, 변증법적 과정에 의해형성된 연속 3도 사슬, 장3화음과 단3화음의 동등성 등이 작곡기법으로 어떻게 표현되었는지 연구된다. 또한 당시 미학적·음향학적 쟁점이었으나 과학적으로 입증되지 않아 현재까지도 묻혀 있던, 배음과 거울관계에 있는 하배음의 속성과 관련된 작곡 기법을 살펴본다. 이연구는 다양한 거울 구조와 기법으로 이루어진 브람스의 작품의 내용을 당시 사변적 음악이론이라는 거울로 들여다보는 과정에 비유할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This study based on the historical information of the time suggests that the speculative music theory in the 19th century is reflected in the compositional practice of Brahms’s late works. This paper introduces harmonic theories and thoughts of musicologists such as Moritz Hauptmann and Hugo Riemann and demonstrates how the composer applied their ideas to his aesthetics. The music examples of Brahms’s late period such as clarinet sonata no. 1 op. 120-1 illustrate Brahms’s harmonic style on specular reflection in symmetrical properties, successive chains of third by dialectical process, equal treatment of major-minor triad and even Riemann’s theory of undertones which are in mirror symmetry relation to overtones. The theme of undertone series had been an issue in the field of acoustics and aesthetics in those days but has been hidden until now because this was not scientifically proved. This study can be a metaphor of looking at the specular images and structures in the musical works reflected in the mirror of speculative theory.
