단일민족 사회에서의 지속가능한 에스닉(ethnic) 경관

국문 초록

에스닉(ethnic) 경관은 단일민족 사회 배경을 갖는 한국사회가 다문화 사회로 가기 위해 매우 중요한 경관 요소가되겠다. 에스닉 경관 내 나타나는 현상을 이해하기 위해본 연구는 1) 영역성으로 인식되는 경계감, 2) 공공성, 3) 중심성을 통해 특정 에스닉 경관을 이해하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 단일민족 사회에서 20년이 넘는 시간동안 유지되고 있는 혜화동 필리핀 거리를 연구 대상지로삼았다. 연구 방법으로는 행태지도를 통해 공간의 주체가되는 필리핀 사람들과 그 외 공간의 객체가 되는 한국인과 그 외 민족들 사이의 공간 점유 행태와 흐름을 분석하였고, 그 안의 작동 체계를 이해하기 위해 인터뷰와 설문을 진행하였다. 연구 결과로 중심성을 갖도록 하는 타갈로어로 진행되는 미사가 중요하게 작용하고 있음을 확인하였고, 귀속감과 심리적 편안함, 향수를 느끼게 하는 요소들이 있어 에스닉 경관이 유지되도록 하는 중요한 요소임을 확인하였다. 또한, 필리핀 거리가 형성되는 기간의 공공성 유지와 필리핀 거리의 분명한 경계의 형성, 그리고필리핀 사람들에게 오랫동안 중심적인 역할을 함으로 에스닉 경관이 지속하고 있음을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

An ethnic landscape is very important for helping ethnically homogeneous societies that are being confronted by multiculturalism maintain their lifestyles. In order to analyze this phenomenon, this study conceptually interpreted an ongoing ethnic landscape as possessing (1) a perceived boundary, (2) a public identity that fosters a sense of openness, and (3) centeredness that creates a sense of independence. Next, a case study was conducted on Hyewha Filipino Street, Seoul, which represents a homogeneous Korean society. Behavior mapping was applied to quantify the place-use patterns of ethnic groups and to observe the actor–audience interactions between Filipinos and Koreans. Additionally, group interviews and questionnaires were used to identify the emotions the ethnic place evoked for Filipino visitors, such as nostalgia, a sense of belonging, and comfortable emotion. As a result of this study, we found that Filipinos tend to visit this street for a number of reasons; most notably, the availability of a Tagalog Mass and the opportunity to converse with fellow Filipinos. Hyewha Filipino Street in metropolitan Seoul was analyzed to represent a sustained ethnic landscape that provides a sense of boundary, is public, and exhibits centeredness within a homogeneous country.
