영문 초록

This paper concerns what is called the “countercyclicity problem,” occurring in the derivation of wh-interrogatives in English as well as the object shift constructions in OS-languages. This problem is assumed to be attributed to the effect of the “phonological edge,” which has been suggested for the computational efficiency of the “shortest movement” within the Probe-Goal Framework since Chomsky(2001). For the optimal solution to the countercyclicity problem, this paper proposes the “searching visibility condition” as an alternative to the “phonological edge,” and argues for that condition based on various empirical phenomena of the unaccusative constructions, the transitive expletive constructions, the superiority effect of multiple wh-interrogatives, etc. Consequently, it comes to light that many superfluous concepts and assumptions, so far suggested within Chomsky’s Probe-Goal Framework, can be eliminated from the computational system of UG, under the searching visibility condition of this paper.
