증언의 재현, 일본군 ‘위안부’ 다큐멘터리의 목소리

국문 초록

한국 사회에서 ‘위안부’들의 증언은 진상규명의 증거로 위치지워졌다. 본 논문은 증언의 도구화가 심화되는 ‘위안부’ 운동의 대중화 시대에 이들의 증언에 접근하는 다른 시도로서 증언을 기반으로 한 다큐멘터리 재현에 초점을 맞춘다. 분석 텍스트인 <낮은 목소리 1>은 1990년대 ‘위안부’ 등장 이후 그녀들의 폭력 경험과 고단한 삶을 그린 초기 대표작이며 <보드랍게>는 2010년대 이후 등장한 후세대의 문제의식을 풍부하게 드러내는 작품이다. 다큐멘터리를 보고 듣는다는 것은 특정한 사운드와 이미지의 결합을 통해 재현된 ‘위안부’의 말하기 그리고 제작자/청자의 듣기 간 상호작용을 경험하는 것이다. 이에 본 논문은 페미니스트와 포스트 식민 다큐멘터리스트들이 확대 정의한 다큐멘터리의 ‘목소리’ 개념을 통해 두 작품이 ‘위안부’의 말하기와 듣기를 재현한 양상을 분석했다. <낮은 목소리 1>에서 이들의 말하기는 적극적인 청자이자 대화 주선자인 제작집단을 통해 육화된 고통을 드러냈으며, <보드랍게>에서는 이미 사망한 ‘위안부’ 생전의 말하기가 청자 집단과 미투 운동가들의 코러스적 목소리를 통해 현재와 역사 다시 쓰기의 가능성으로 살아난다. 두 편의 다큐멘터리는 증언이 폭력을 입증하는 도구가 아니라 그것을 살아낸 현존 그리하여 현재와 역사를 다시 쓸 수 있는 가능성을 지닌 타자/주체의 목소리임을 구체화한다.

영문 초록

Since the 1990s, the testimony of ‘comfort women’ has been positioned as evidence of truth-finding in Korea. This article focuses on two documentaries as a new attempt to approach the testimony of the ‘comfort women’ in the era of popularization of the ‘comfort women’s movement and the biological death of ‘comfort women.’ The Murmuring(Byun Young-Joo, 1995) is an early representative piece that depicts the experiences of violence and the hard life of the ‘comfort women’ after their coming out in the 1990s, and Comfort(Park, Mun-Chil, 2022) is a documentary that raises the critical questions of the post-memory generation that appeared after the 2010s in an intriguing way. To watch and listen to such a documentary is to experience the interaction between the speaking of the ‘comfort women’ and the listening of the producer/listener, which is represented through a combination of specific sounds and images. In this regard, this article borrowed the concept of the ‘voice’ of the documentary, which was expanded the definition by feminists and post-colonial documentarians. This article analyzed how the two pieces represented the speaking of ‘comfort women’ and listeners’ listening. In The Murmuring, their speaking revealed the pain incarnated through the production group, who were active listeners and dialogists. In Comfort, the speaking of ‘comfort women’ who had already passed away came alive with the possibility of rewriting the present and history through the chorus of the listener group and #MeToo activists. The two documentaries crystallize the possibility that testimony is not a tool to prove violence but the voice of the other/subject with the potential to rewrite the present and history.
