긴급재난지원금 수령과정을 통해 본 성인모색기 청년의 교차하는 가족주의와 개인의식

국문 초록

이 연구는 2020년 긴급재난지원금이라는 낯선 복지 체험을 계기로 드러난 ‘성인모색기’ 청년들의 ‘성인됨’과 ‘독립화’의 서사, 그리고 그 의미를 가족과의 관계 속에서 분석하고자 한 것이다. 연구방법은 심층면접으로, 중규모 도시에 거주하는, 부모와 분거하고 있는 1인 가구 20 대 청년을 대상으로 한다. 17명의 참여자 중 12명이 대학생으로 다수를 차지한다. 연구주제와관련하여 재난지원금의 수령방식, 독립의 개념, 개인주의와 가족주의의 교차적 양식의 세 가지측면을 중심으로 분석하였는데 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 재난지원금의 수령방식을 보면 청년들의 가족에 대한 동일시, 자신의 이해(利害)보다는 부모와 가족의 이해를 앞세우는 가족주의적 태도가 반영된다. 17명의 연구참여자 중 수급자격을 가진 4명을 제외하고 가구주의 결정으로 지원금을 받아야 했던 대부분의 참여자 중 한 명외에는 먼저 부모님께 지원금 분배를 요구한 사례가 없었다. 돈 버느라 고생하시는 부모에 대한 안쓰러움과 고마움, 자신들을 부양하느라 들인 노력을 알고 있는 자녀의 입장에서는 “부모돈”인 지원금 분배를 요구하는 것은 “양심의 문제”, “도덕”의 문제로 이해되었다. 이것은 자녀라는 위치에서 가족의 요구를 가족원 개인의 요구보다 앞에 둔다는 점에서 청년들이 갖는 가족주의적 태도를 보여준다고 할 수 있을 것이다. 둘째, 독립에 대한 태도에서는 매우 강력한 개인주의 의식이 나타나는데 그러나 이들의 서사에서 독립은 가족과 연관된 사건으로 기술되고 있다. 독립 주제에 대한 서사에서 부상하는 소주제들은 “부모로부터(와의) 독립, 경제적 자립, 개인화된 주거공간’’ 이라는 세 가지 의미들로 구성되어 있었다. 독립의 원인에는 집과 학교ㆍ직장의 거리 등이 포함되었으나, 이외에 통제적인부모로부터의 탈출욕구가 작용하였다. 한편 경제적 자립에 대한 것으로, 특히 아직 대학 재학중인 비취업의 20대 중후반 참여자들은 부모에게 경제적으로 의존하는 것을 “부끄럽다”거나, “부담스러운” 일로 표현하기도 했다. 세 번째 의미화는 개인화된 주거공간으로 나타나는데, 주거 독립은 자유와 개인의 가치를 보호할 수 있는, 포기할 수 없는 필수요건으로 여겨졌다. 셋째, 성인모색기 20대 청년들의 개인주의 가치와 가족주의 가치의 교차적 특성을 심층적으로 이해하기 위해서 17명의 참여자 중 그 복합성이 가장 강하게 드러나는 다섯 명의 참여자의서사를 분석하였다. 이들의 독립의식에는 강력한 개인주의의 태도와 동시에 가족에 대한 경제적 지원과 정서적 돌봄의 책임을 기꺼이 분담하고자 하는 강력한 가족주의적 책임의식이 공존하였다. 흥미롭게도 이 유형에 속하는 참여자들 중 네 명이 맏이였다. 이러한 복합성은 장남이나 장녀와 같이 맏이라는 위치에 책임을 부여하는 한국 가족주의의 이념적 측면, 불안정했던가족생활 속에서 형성된 부모, 특히 엄마에 대한 연민과 애정과 같은 정서적 결합의 차원, 그리고 어려운 가정형편을 경험하면서 생겨난 책임감과 같은 상황적 요인 등 여러 가지 배경이 작용했던 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

This study aims to analyze the complexity of the familial identity among youths of “emerging adulthood” in their twenties in relation with parents. The coming of new welfare policy of the COVID-19 emergency relief fund in 2020 created the environnment for revealing their complicated attitudes towards parents and the independence. The relief fund originally designed to be distributed by a head of a household made the entitlement status of the youth dependent on parent. We wanted to show the family related policy experience among the youths and their conflicting or interconnected attitudes towards independence and familism. For this purpose in-depth interviews were conducted with 17 young people mainly composed of college students living separately from their parents in the medium-sized cities. The results are as follows. Firstly, the way of receiving the relief funds showed the youths’ familist value that put their families’ needs before their own. While many of them could get the money from their parents they rarely asked first their parents for giving money to themselves because they think they should be thankful for the sacrifices their parents made for children for long time while considering the economic condition of the parents’ household. Secondly, a very strong sense of individualism and independence was also found. It includes three meanings: the economic independence, the private residential space, and the independence from parents and ‘for parents’ which was related with the consideration for lessening a burden from parents. Thirdly, the narratives of five interviewees showing the strong interconnectedness between familism and individualism were analyzed, who were selected through the categorization using the two values above. Incidentally, all of these participants were the oldest. Their independence consciousness was strong, but the attitudinal familism was also strong. The feelings willingly to share the responsibility of economic support and emotional care for their families coexisted. This complexity seemed to have various backgrounds like the ideological aspect of Korean familism of filial piety, which places filial responsibility to the eldest child, and the emotional bonding such as compassion and affection for parents, especially for mother, paradoxically formed through the painful family history such as the economic difficulty and parental conflicts.
