신경다양성 개념 및 변화에 대한 일고찰

국문 초록

본 연구는 최근 자폐특성과 ADHD에 대한 인식 증대로 인해 주목받고 있는 신경다양성 개념의 유래 및 변천과정에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 신경다양성 개념은 1990년대 자폐당사자들이 실시간적으로자폐에 대해 논의할 수 있게 되면서 형성되었으며 인문․사회과학적 배경을 두고 있다. 그런데 이 개념은 마음이론에 대항하기 위해 형성되었다. 마음이론은 진화심리학적 논의에서 시작되었으나 바론코헨 등의 자폐연구자들에 의해 점차 자폐당사자의 마음맹, 즉 비-사람 상태를 입증하기 위한 도구로변질되었다. 마음이론 개념은 표준분포 개념과 함께 장애인의 성원권을 부정하고 자폐를 치료의 대상으로 만들어 전세계를 ‘신경규범적’공간으로 만들려고 한다. 이러한 마음이론적 개념에 자폐당사자들이 신경다양성과 이중공감문제를 통해 문제를 제기하자, 신경다양성을 왜곡하거나 신경다양성을 축소하는 방법을 통해 신경다양성 개념에 대한 공격이 발생하고 있다. 그러나 최근 세바다가 제안하는 신경다양성에 대한 정신질환으로의 확대 제안은 이와 별개의 제안으로서 자폐의 이중공감문제적 문제를 해소할 가능성을 제안하고 있다 할 것이다. 본 연구를 통해 신경다양성에 대한 올바른 이해가 형성되고 국내에서도 신경다양성 및 신자폐연구활동이 시작되어 자폐당사자가 소외의 대상이자 서비스의 대상, 돌봄의 객체로 분리된 현상이 해소될실마리가 잡히길 희망한다.

영문 초록

The study finds out the origin and the transition process of the notion of Neurodiversity, which has increased awareness of the Autistic trait and ADHD. The idea of Neurodiversity started in the 1990s, based on humanities and social science backgrounds, thanks to autistics' real-time debates on autistic characteristics worldwide. By the way, the notion counters the theory of mind(ToM). ToM aims to make the world a ‘neuronormal’ society by denying membership to people with Disabilities and creating ‘Autism’ as the cure target. ToM began from evolutionary psychology; deteriorated into a rationalisation tool for proving the mindblindness of autistics for downgrading into non-human by researchers in autism, including Baron-Cohen. As Autistic people refute the theory using Neurodiversity and the Double Empathy Problem(DEP), opponents block the Neurodiversity by distorting or reducing the notion. Nevertheless, a recent proposal that expands Neurodiversity into mental illnesses by 3Oceans is different from the interruption: which gives the possibility of resolving the problems from DEP of autistic people. The study will contribute to a proper understanding of Neurodiversity, Initiatives of the Neurodiversity movement, and new autistic studies in Korea: which could free autistic people resolved from isolation and objectification as the target of service and care.
