국문 초록

지난 60여 년 동안 전 세계 관광산업은 괄목할만한 성장을 보이며, 탐구 분야로서 관광학이 발화하여 학문적 정체성을 이루어 가고 있다. 그러나 학문으로서 관광 이론과 방법론은 여전히 파편화되어 있고 미성숙한 상황이다. 이 논문은 관광의 학문적 정체성을 위한 기준을 중심으로 관광학 연구의 현 위치를 파악해 보고, 향후 나아가야 할 방향에 대해 모색해 보고자 하였다. 관광학이 학문적 정체성을 갖기 위해서는 특정 연구 대상이 있고, 다른 학문과 보편적으로 공유되지 않는 전문적 지식체를 형성하고 있어야 한다. 그리고 학문은 축적된 전문 지식체를 효과적으로 조직화할 수 있는 이론과 개념이 있어야 하며, 학문 분야에 따라 개발된 특정 연구방법들을 가진다. 동시에 대학에서 가르치는 과목의 형태로 대학이나 각 학과, 전문 협회, 학회 등의 제도화를 및 특정 교육을 통해 한 세대에서 다음 세대로 학문이 재생산될 수 있어야 한다. 연구 결과 관광은 학문 공동체가 형성되어 있고, 실제 많은 이론적 논의와 활동이 나타나고 있으나, 아직 고유한 이론 체계와 방법론 등의 과학적 정체성이 부족함을 알 수 있다. 학문적 정체성 확립을 위해, 특히 부족한 관광의 지식 생성을 위해 이 연구에서는 간학문적 연구의 중요성을 시사하였으며, 연구자들의 다양하고 열린 방법과 접근들을 요청한다.

영문 초록

Tourism science has emerged as a field of study to establish an academic identity, as the global tourism industry has undergone remarkable growth. Nevertheless, tourism theory and methodology remain fragmented and underdeveloped as a field of study. This paper examines the current status of tourism research in relation to academic identity criteria and discusses its future course. For tourism studies to have an academic identity, it must have a distinct research object and a body of knowledge that is not universally shared with other disciplines. In addition, the study must include theories and concepts that can effectively organize the body of professional knowledge, as well as academic field-specific research methods. Also, academics must be transmitted from one generation to the next via specialized education by institutionalizing universities, departments, and professional associations. Tourism has an academic community, and there are active theoretical discussions, but there are still no scientific identities, such as distinct theoretical systems and methodologies. Thus, this study emphasizes the significance of inter-disciplinary research to generate tourism knowledge that is notably lacking and calls for a variety of research approaches and perspectives.
