국문 초록

김규식은 어린 나이에 부모를 잃고 갖은 역경을 이겨내며 항일독립운동사에 위대한 민족지도자로 자리매김했다. 그는 자신의 영일을 위해서가 아니라 민족 공동체를 위한 희생적인 삶을 통해 ‘빛나는 민족의 별’이 되었던 것이다. 언더우드 미국 선교사의 도움으로 독실한 기독교 신앙심과 미국식 교육의 영향으로 선각자적 자질과 국제정세에 해박한 지식을 갖게 됨으로써 파리강화회의 한국대표로, 구미위원부 위원장으로 선임되는 등 독립운동시기 탁월한 외교능력을 발휘하였다. 김규식의 독립외교 활동에 있어서 가장 특징적인 부분은 공식 외교 행위로서의 외교활동보다는 외교 대상국에게 간접적으로 영향을 미치는 선전외교활동을 펼쳤다는 점이다. 그는 일본의 방해로 미국 정부와의 직접적인 공식 외교활동이 어렵다는 사실을 잘 간파하고, 미국시민의 여론에 호소하는 선전외교활동에 집중하였다. 그 결과 한민족에 대한 일제의 폭압을 폭로하고, 한국독립의 당위성을 여론화하는 데 기여했다. 본 논문은 먼저 김규식이 중국 망명 이전까지 걸어온 생애, 파리강화회의 활동 시기와 구미위원부 활동 시기에 그가 행한 독립외교활동을 면밀히 살펴보고자 한다.

영문 초록

Kim Gyu-sik established himself as a great national leader in the history of the anti-Japanese independence movement, overcoming adversity he had after losing his parents at a young age. He became a “shining star of the nation” through his sacrificial life for the nation's community. With the help of American missionary Underwood, a devout Christian faith and an American-style education led to a visionary qualities and a well-informed knowledge of international affairs. Thus, he displayed excellent diplomatic skills during the independence movement, including being appointed as the Korean representative to the Paris Peace Conference and as the chairman of the Korean Commission to America and Europe for the Republic of Korea(the Korean Commission). The most characteristic part of Kim's independent diplomatic activities is that he conducted propaganda diplomacy activities, indirectly affected the target countries rather than diplomatic activities as official ones. He was well aware of the fact that direct official diplomatic activities with the U.S. government were difficult due to Japan's interference, and focused on propaganda diplomacy that appealed to the public opinion of the Americans and Europeans. As a result, he has greatly contributed to exposing the Japanese oppression of the Korean people and popularizing the legitimacy of Korea's independence. This paper will first take a closer look at Kim Gyu-sik's 121 independent diplomatic activities during the period of his activities at the Paris Peace Conference and the period of his activities at the Korean Commission, as well as his life before his defection to China.
