국문 초록

금년 2019년은 3·1운동과 대한민국임시정부 수립 100주년을 기념하는 해라는 점에서 한국사에 있어서나 한국 기독교사에 있어서 아주 특별한 해이다. 독립선언서는 한국이 일제에 의해 강탈된 만큼 식민지지배를 인정하지 않는다는 의미에서 독립국임을, 한국인이 주권을 가진 자주민임을 만천하에 선언했다. 이는 곧 군주제 국가에서 앞으로 근대적 민족국가(nation-state)로서 민주공화제 국가로 갈 수 있는 근거를 마련했다는 점에서 매우 큰 역사적 의미를 갖는다. 3·1운동 직후 바로 민주공화제 정부로서 대한민국임시정부 수립으로 이어지고, 나아가 광복 후에 민주공화국으로서의 대한민국이 수립된 것은 이 같은 사실을 잘 입증해주고 있다. 3·1운동은 일제로부터 당장의 독립을 성취하는 데는 실패했지만, 그것이 추구한 정신을 살펴볼 때, 민족사적으로나 세계사적으로 그 의의는 실로 컸다. 3·1운동 과정에서 표출된 정신은 비폭력 정신, 자유·민주 정신, 통합 정신, 평화 정신 등으로 기독교의 복음정신과 맥락이 닿아 있다. 한 국가가 존속하기 위해서는 하드파워도 중요하겠지만, 정신력을 의미하는 소프트파워의 강화가 무엇보다도 중요하다. 그런 면에서 3·1운동 정신을 오늘에 되살리는 노력이 매우 필요하다. 3·1운동 정신은 일제 강점기는 물론, 광복 이후 민족이 분단된 현 시기에도 우리 민족을 하나로 묶는 정신적 바탕이 되고 있기 때문이다. 이제 한국교회는 북한지역으로의 민주공화국의 확장에 모든 역량을 모아 기필코 ‘피 흘림 없는 복음적 평화통일’을 성취해야 한다. 이것이 1인 독재 수령절대주의체제 하에서 신음하고 있는 북한 동포 개개인의 인권을 회복하는 일이요, 자유, 정의, 평등이 숨 쉬는 통일한국의 건설하는 일이라고 할 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 먼저 3·1운동의 준비과정과 전개과정에서 특별히 기독교인들이 행한 주요 활동들에 주목하여 분석한 다음, 3·1운동 정신에 녹아 있는 기독교적 가치를 살펴보고 있다.

영문 초록

This year 2019 is a very special year in Korean history as it marksthe 100th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement andthe establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic ofKorea. The Declaration of Independence declared that Korea is anindependent nation and that Koreans were self-reliant citizens, in thesense that Korea, robbed by the Japanes, does not recognize colonialrule. This is of great historical significance in that there has been abasis for moving from a monarchy to a democratic republic as anation-state in the future. The fact that the Republic of Korea wasestablished as a democratic republic immediately after the March 1stIndependence Movement, and that the Republic of Korea wasestablished as a democratic republic after liberation, proves this factwell. The establishment of the Republic of Korea as a temporarygovernment of the Republic of Korea immediately after the March 1stIndependence Movement, and the establishment of the Republic ofKorea as a democratic republic after Korea's liberation from Japan'scolonial rule, clearly proves this well. The March 1st IndependenceMovement failed to achieve immediate independence from Japanesecolonial rule, but its significance, but in looking at the spirit itpursued, its significance, both in national history and in world history,was indeed great. The spirits expressed during the March 1stIndependence Movement are nonviolent spirit, freedom and democraticspirit, unity spirit and peace spirit, which are in line with theevangelical spirit of Christianity. Hard power is important for a nationto survive, but strengthening soft power, which means mental power,is more important than anything else. In this sense, it is verynecessary to make efforts to revive today the spirit of the March 1stIndependence Movement. This is because the spirit of the March 1stIndependence Movement becomes the spiritual foundation of unitingour people, even today when two Koreas are divided, as well as theJapanese colonial period. Now, the Korean church needs to gather allits capabilities in the expansion of the democratic republic into theNorth Korean region, and must fulfill the ‘evangelical peacefulreunification without bloodshed.’ This is the task of restoring thehuman rights of the North Korean people who are groaning under atotalitarian dictatorship, and building a unified Korea that guaranteesfreedom, justice and equality.
