담헌(湛軒) 홍대용(洪大容)의 사회개혁사상에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 논문은 담헌(湛軒) 홍대용(洪大容, 1731-1783)을 실학자나 문인, 근대 자연과학자로서만이 아니라 당대의 사회를 개혁하고자 했던 지식인 및 사회사상가의 입장에서 분석하였다. 흔히 홍대용을 18세기 조선 후기의 실학자나 북학사상을 근간을 이룬 인물로 보지만, 당대의 시대적 상황을 개혁하고자 하였던 사상가로 다룬 연구는 흔하지 않다. 홍대용은 성리학, 천문학, 수학, 음악, 정치, 경제 등 다양한 분야에서 높은 수준의 전문성을 가진 학자라는 점에는 이의를 제기하기 힘들다. 또한 박지원, 박제가, 이덕무 등과 같은 북학파에 영향을 미친 것도 사실이다. 그러나 홍대용의 철학과 세계관 속에는 당대의 부패하고 무능한 정치권, 백성들의 삶을 질곡으로 밀어 넣은 사회경제적 상황에 대한 고민이 깊게 담겨져 있다. 그의 학문적 경향이나 철학 및 사상은 중국의 연경을 다녀 온 이후로 급격한 변화를 겪게 된다. 담헌은 철학이나 사상은 당대의 실학자나 북학사상가들과 공유하는 점이 많으나, 독특한 측면도 적지 않다. 그의 사상의 핵심은 바로 화이관의 변화, 신분제나 행정, 교육 등 분야별 개혁이 포함된다. 담헌은 일국적 차원에서 평등한 사회로의 개혁을 꿈꾸어 왔으며, 대외적인 관계에서도 당시 지배적인 위치에 있었던 중국과 평등한 관계를 꿈꾸어 왔다. 이러한 점에서 홍대용의 [의산문답]이나 [임하경륜]에 대한 사회사상적 접근을 필요로 한다. 담헌 홍대용의 사상을 실학자, 북학사상가, 문학자, 자연과학자로 규정해 버리게 될 경우, 그의 사상이 담고 있는 지식인, 사상가로서의 고민과 사회개혁에의 꿈을 사장해 버리는 오류를 범하게 된다. 조선 후기의 한 시대를 관통한 그의 사유를 온전하게 복원하기 위한 후속 연구가 필요하다. 담헌의 사상이 오늘날 정치사회적, 경제적 변화를 목도하고 있는 우리들에게 주는 학문적·실천적 함의를 찾아보는 학술적 노력이 계속되길 기대한다.

영문 초록

This study investigates Damheon(湛軒) Hong Dae-yong(洪大容, 1731-1783) as not only a Silhak scholar, man of letters and modern natural scientist but an intellectual and social thinker who tried to reform his contemporary society. Hong Dae-yong is usually considered a Silhak scholar of the late Joseon Dynasty in the 18th century who laid the foundation for the Northern School of thought, so few have studied him as a thinker to reform the situations of his time. It is not easy to raise an objection to the fact that Hong Dae-yong is a scholar with a high standard of expertise in diverse fields including Neo-Confucianism, astronomy, mathematics, music, politics and economics. Besides, it is also true that he exerted influence on the Northern School of thought such as Park Ji-won, Pak Je-ga, and Yi Deok-mu. In Hong Dae-yong’s philosophy and view of the world, his deep concerns over corrupted and incompetent politicians of the time, socioeconomic situations pushing the people into fetters of life are deeply rooted. His academic tendency, philosophy and thought showed a sudden change after his visit to Yanjing(now Beijing), China. The result of the journey led him to another path different from that of then Silhak scholars and Northern School thinkers. The essentials of it include changed Sinocentrism and reforms in such sectors as caste system, administration, and education. Academically, Hong Dae-yong’s stance reveals considerable differences from that of Northern School thinkers as he dreamed of reforming the national dimension into an egalitarian society and establishing an equal diplomatic relationship with China, which was then in a ruling status. In this respect, an approach based on social ideas is needed to Hong Dae-yong’s Catechism of Eusan mountain and Imhagyeongryun. In case of limiting Hong Dae-yong’s thought as a Silhak scholar, Northern School thinker, man of letters, and natural scientist, we may commit an error of disregarding his concerns and dreams of social reforms as an intellectual and thinker. To wholly restore his ideas penetrating a period in the late Joseon Kingdom will be a significant work to ruminate on Hong Dae-yong's academic and practical messages to us who face political, social and economic changes these days.
