국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 일제 강점기 단재 신채호의 역사인식과 정치적 실천의 현대적 의미를 찾고자하는 것이었다. 신채호에게 있어서 일제는 극복되어야 할 대상이었으며, 어떻게 극복할 것인가라는 것은 시대적 과제요, 그가 일생을 두고 일관되게 고민하고 치열하게 싸워온 문제였다. 신채호는 역사가, 언론인, 정치가로 알려져 있지만, 그러한 활동도 조국의 독립과 민족의 해방이라는 시대적 과제를 해결하기 위해 치열하게 전개해 온 정치적 실천의 일환이었다는 점을 이해하는 것이 중요하다. 따라서 본 연구는 신채호가 일제의 강점기하에서 무엇을 위해, 어떻게 투쟁하였는가, 그의 투쟁은 어떤 정치적 의미를 가지는가를 이해하는 것에 초점을 두었다. 본 연구는 생의 초기에 애국심을 고양하고, 민족의 유대감을 제고하려는 노력에서 시작되어 일생동안 진행된 역사연구나, 이후의 반(反)임정활동, 아나키스트적 민중혁명 등의 활동 모두 민족해방과 독립이라는 목표를 향한 정치적 실천의 지속이었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그는 그 목표를 향한 실천과정에서 ‘민중’의 힘을 발견하였으며, 민중을 혁명의 주체로 민족해방을 이루기 위한 이론적․실천적 노력을 일생동안 펼쳤다. 그의 삶은 “탁월한 민족사학자이면서 구국독립의 민족운동에 헌신한 실천적 독립투사”의 삶이었다. 주어진 역사가 제기하는 시대적 과제를 회피하지 않고 그 책임을 다하겠다는 정신과 이론과 실천의 융합, 실천을 통한 이론의 실현을 사명으로 삼은 신채호의 정치적 실천과정은 오늘날 시대가 부과하는 현재적 과제를 안고 있는 지식인들에게 주는 함의가 매우 크다.

영문 초록

This paper aims at finding out contemporary meanings of Danje Shin Chae-ho's historical awareness and political practice during the Japanese colonial rule of Korea. For him, the imperial Japan was an object to overcome. And how to do that was a task of the period and an issue he consistently agonized over and fiercely fought against throughout his whole life. Shin Chae-ho was known as a historian, journalist, and politician and it is significant to understand even such activities were a part of political practice he intensely developed in order to solve the task of his time, national independence and liberation. Hence, this study focuses on comprehending what Shin Chae-ho fought for and how he did under the Japanese occupation period as well as what political meanings his struggle had. All his activities including the historical study he began early in his life and lasted his lifetime as an effort to enhance patriotism and strengthen the national sense of fellowship, anti-provisional government activities, and anarchistic mass revolution in later years were confirmed to be a continuous political practice for the purpose of national liberation and independence. He found the power of 'the people' in the process of fulfilling the goal and made a theoretical and practical effort to achieve the national liberation with the people as the principal revolutionary agent all his life. Thus, his life was that of “a distinguished national historian and practical independence fighter dedicated to saving the country and liberating the nation.” Both the union of his spirit, theory and practice not to avoid the task with which his time burdened him and to carry out his responsibility to the fullest, and the process of Shin Chae-ho's political practice to actualize theories through exercises imply really great significance for today's intellectuals bearing current tasks this era gives them.
