In response to the global environmental pollution problem, many studies have been conducted focusing on revitalizing sustainable consumption to reduce environmental pollution in the consumer market. However, this study predicts the moral licensing effect, a phenomenon in which ‘moral behavior’ for environmental conservation can induce ‘immoral behavior’ that causes environmental pollution. Specifically, sustainable consumption practices, socially desirable in our society, can have an unintended effect on the overspending tendency, which is considered to cause environmental pollution. In addition, this study predicts that consumers' credibility in companies that are other players in the market can affect the level of perceived consumer effectiveness and that consumers' credibility in companies can moderate the relationship between sustainable consumption practice and overspending tendency.
These predictions were verified using data from the Korea Consumer Agency's 2021 life of consumption index. As a result of the data analysis, the more sustainable consumption is practiced, the greater the overspending tendency. It was also confirmed that consumers' credibility in companies moderates this relationship. Specifically, when the level of consumers' credibility in companies is high(vs. low), the effect of sustainable consumption practice on the overspending tendency is weakened(vs. strengthened).
Overall, this study is meaningful in that it examines a new phenomenon of moral licensing effect through sustainable consumption practice and overspending tendency by showing that individuals' moral consumption behavior can lead to an increase in other immoral consumption behavior. It also suggests that the moral licensing effect can be moderated by external factors such as credibility in companies, extending the relevant literature. Therefore, the results of this study provide insight and a deep understanding of what should be the basis for inducing behavior for practical environmental conservation.
