효성그룹 조홍제 회장의 기업가정신과 경영이념의 발전과정에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 효성그룹의 창업주 조홍제 회장의 기업가정신과 경영이념을 연구하고 그의기업가정신이 어떻게 계승 발전되었는가를 파악하는 것이 목적이다. 조홍제는 명문 유학자 가문에서 태어나 엄격한 유교적 질서를 중요시 하는 집에서 자랐다. 그는 늦은 나이에신식학문을 배우기 시작하여 30세에 일본의 명문대학에서 경제학부를 졸업하였다. 해방후 그는 이병철과 함께 삼성물산을 설립하여 탁월한 경영수완으로 오늘날 삼성그룹의 토대를 만들었다. 그러나 이병철과의 갑작스런 사업결별 후, 56세의 고령에도 불구하고 효성물산을 설립하여 1970년대 효성그룹을 재계 5위 그룹으로 성장시켰다. 조홍제 회장의기업가정신과 경영철학은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 인본주의에 바탕을 둔 인재경영과 인화정신의 강조이다. 둘째, 사업에 대한 뛰어난 통찰력을 기반으로 기업의 이윤을 창출하고 이것을 사회와 국가의 발전을 위해 나누려는 국리민복(國利民福)의 정신이다. 셋째, 기술혁신을 통한 기술자립화와 품질경영이다. 이러한 그의 기업가정신은 그의 아들과 손자에게까지 계승되어, 실제 기업경영에서 그대로 실천되었다. 본 연구는 조홍제 회장 기업가정신을 재정립하고, 그의 기업가정신의 사상적 원류를 되집어 본 후, 그의 기업가정신이 오늘날 경영학에서 강조하는 지속가능경영과 직결되어 있다는 것을 밝히는 데 있다. 그의 기업가정신은 기업의 사회적 책임의 수준을 넘어 오늘날 지속가능경영의 실천인 ESG 경영과 맞닿아 있다. 오늘날 효성은 그의 기업가정신을 이어받아 국내 최고의 ESG 경영평가를 받고 있다. 본 연구에서는 조홍제 회장의 기업가정신의 본질을 밝히고, 그의 기업가정신이 오늘날 효성의 ESG 경영과 어떻게 연결되는가를 밝히고자 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to understand the essence of Korean entrepreneurship by reviewing the entrepreneurship and management philosophy of Hyosung Group founder, Chairman Hong-Jai Cho. He was born into a family of prestigious Confucian scholars and grew up in the house that values strict Confucian order. He could learn modern education at the late age, and graduated from the department of Economics at a prestigious Japanese university at the age of 30. He founded Samsung C&T with Byung-Cheol Lee, and laid the foundation for today’s Samsung Group with the outstanding management skills. However, due to his sudden business breakup with Lee, he had to leave the company, leaving many of his accomplishments. Despite the old age of 56, he established Hyosung C&T, which he had always dreamed of. Hyosung C&T enabled him to realize his business philosophy, which became the driving force for the growth of Hyosung Group into the 5th largest business group in Korea. Chairman Cho’s entrepreneurship and management philosophy can be summarized into three points as follows. First, he emphasized talented manpower management based on humanism as well as the spirit of human harmony. Second, it is the spirit of business patriotism and national welfare by the creation of corporate profits through the outstanding business insight as well as by the sharing them for the development of society and the nation. Third, he try to get technology independence from developed countries as well as to enhance quality through technological innovation. His entrepreneurship was passed down to his son and grandchildren, and was applied and practiced in actual business management. This study aim at systematically re-establish the entrepreneurship of Chairman Cho as well as to find the source of his entrepreneurship. The other focus is to reveal that his entrepreneurship is directly related to the sustainability management emphasized in today’s business administration. His philosophy goes beyond the level of corporate social responsibility and is in contact with ESG management, which is the center of today’s sustainable management. Today, Hyosung group has inherited his entrepreneurship, as a result, they could receive the best ESG management evaluation in Korea. This paper contributed to reveal the essence of the entrepreneurship of Chairman Cho, and how his entrepreneurship is connected with Hyosung’s ESG management today.
