국문 초록

본고는 니체의 자유 개념에 대한 상이한 언급을 정합적으로 이해하고자 한다. 니체는 전통적 의미의 자유의지 개념이 근거하고 있는 피상적 인간 이해를 비판하고 자연주의적 인간 이해에 입각하여 새로운 의미의 자유의지와 자유 개념을설명한다. 전통적 의미의 자유의지는 행위의 자기원인으로서 자아의 확실성, 행위의 동기들에 관한 의식적 선택의 가능성에 근거한다. 그러나 니체는 자아의확실성은 문법적 습관에 의존하고 있을 뿐이라는 점을 지적하고 의식적 사유 역시 인간의 정신적 활동 전체가 아니라 피상적인 부분일 뿐이라는 것을 보여준다. 전통적 의미의 자유의지는 피상적인 인간 이해에 근거하고 있기 때문에 니체는 이를 부정한다. 동시에 니체는 인간에 대한 자연주의적 접근을 통해 몸과 충동을 강조하면서자아와 구분되는 자기 개념을 제안한다. 자기는 충동들의 위계질서를 통해 설명되며, 충동들이 만들어내는 위계질서는 한 개인이 누구인지를 말해준다. 더 나아가 충동들은 인간의 인식과 행위에 중요한 영향을 미친다. 특히 행위와 관련하여 충동들은 의식에 떠오르는 동기들, 감정적 태도들의 방향을 미리 정향시키면서 행위의 범위 자체를 결정한다. 기존의 자유의지 개념은 자연주의적 인간이해에 입각했을 때 불가능한 것이므로, 니체는 자유의지와 자유를 행위의 결정과 실행에 있어서 발생하는 쾌감이나 우월의 정서로 재정의한다. 이러한 방식으로 자유의지가 재정의 된다면, 니체가 강조하고 예찬하는 ‘자기 조형’의 문제는 개인의 의식적 결단의 문제가 아니다. 개인은 자기 조형의 가능성을 가진 존재들이지만, 이는 자기 조형이 권장되는 사회적, 문화적 조건이마련될 때 이루어질 수 있다. 그런 점에서 니체의 문화비판은 이러한 조건의 형성을 위한 시도이며 니체는 이를 철학과 철학자의 중대한 과제로 부여한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to find a consistent understanding of Nietzsche’s ambivalent remarks on freedom. Nietzsche criticizes traditional understanding of free will because it is based on a superficial view of humans. In particular, the ego and consciousness have played the most important roles in the history of philosophy in comprehending humans as agents. However, Nietzsche asserts that the ego is an illusion caused by grammar and that conscious thought is a superficial part of our mental activities. Therefore, Nietzsche thinks that previous understanding about the actions of humans should be replaced with a naturalistic approach. By stressing drives and the body, Nietzsche provides a naturalistic explanation of the self. Nietzsche’s revisionary concept of self should be distinguished from the ego. Drives are the key explainer in Nietzsche’s account of the self; the hierarchical structure of drives constitutes one’s being. Such drives have a significant influence on human perception and behavior in the sense that their activities allow people to take certain emotional attitudes toward events. Therefore, Nietzsche’s naturalistic approach provides little wiggle room for human freedom; he therefore attempts to redefine free will and freedom as pleasures of the commanding drives. According to Nietzsche’s revisionary concept of free will and freedom, self-creation is not a matter of an individual’s conscious decision. Even though an individual possesses the possibility of self-creation, Nietzsche stresses the cultural and social conditions that encourage individual self-creation. Thus, Nietzsche’s critique of culture is regarded as an attempt to form the cultural and social conditions necessary for self-creation.
