국내 동남아시아계 유학생들이 인식하는 문제와 대응기제 방법

국문 초록

한국은 OECD국가임에도 불구하고 유학생의 수가 다른 OECD국에 비해 낮은 편이다. 한국이 국제적인 경쟁력을 갖추고 더 많은 유학생들을 유치하기 위해서 현재 한국에서 유학하고 있는 학생들이 문제라고 인식하는 부분들을 파악하고 만족스러운 유학생활에 필요한 요소들이 무엇인지 심층적으로 검토해야 할 필요가 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 말레이시아, 인도네시아, 베트남에서 온 14명의 유학생들을 대상으로 한국에서 유학생활을 하면서 문제라고 인식하고 있는 것이 무엇인지 살펴보고 문제 해결을 위해 어떠한 대응기제 방법을 선택하는지 또한 대응기제 방법이 사회적 지지 네트워크 및 임파워먼트와 관련성이 있는지 살펴보았다. 연구 결과 참여자들은 한국 유학생활을 진퇴양란의 연속으로 인식하고 있었으며 주로 소극적 저항 대응기제 방법을 취하는 것으로 나타났다. 이들은 자신의 문제를 사회의 큰 틀 안에서 인식할 때 임파워되었고 임파워되는 과정에서 사회적 지지 네트워크가 긍정적인 영향을 끼치는 것으로 나타났다. 연구 결과 주최국의 호의적인 태도(배려와 격려 등)가 한국생활에 잘 적응하고자 하는 동기부여로 작용하는 것으로 나타났으며 한국에 대해 더욱 우호적인 태도를 갖도록 하였다. 동남아시아 국가의 유학생들은 증가하고 있는 현재 학생들의 유학생활 만족도를 높이고 한국에 대하여 긍정적인 태도를 갖게 하기 위해 적극적인 사회적 지지 네트워크 연계와 더욱 호의적인 태도를 제안한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate issues international students from Southeast Asian countries face while studying in Korea. Through 14 in-depth interviews with students from Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam, the study identified issues they consider problems and examined how they cope with these problems. The findings revealed that students do not experience ‘honeymoon’ stage when they first arrive to Korea and they chose passive resistant coping mechanism to handle their problems. Findings suggest that students become empowered as they understand their issues situated in a larger social structure, that is, as they recognize issues of racial discrimination, administrative issues within Korea’s political, social, cultural structure, they became empowered and this process is related to the coping mechanism they chose upon. Moreover, findings suggest social network has positive influence on students in the process of empowerment. Furthermore, interviews revealed that positive attitude of the host country has positive influence on level of engagement (academically and socially) and attitude of the students positively. Suggestions for future research as well as ways in which overall satisfaction of international students studying in Korea could be increased are suggested.
