이토 게이카쿠(伊藤計劃) 『하모니』(ハーモニー)를 통해 본 통제와 자유의 의미

국문 초록

1974년 도쿄에서 태어난 이토 게이카쿠(伊藤計劃)는 무사시노대학(武蔵野大学) 미술학부를 졸업하고, 2007년 『학살기관』(虐殺器官)으로 작가 데뷔를 하였다. 2008년에는 두 번째 장편소설 『하모니』를 발표하였고, 이 소설은 2009년에 제30회 일본SF대상과 제40회 세이운(星雲)상을 수상하며 일본 문단에 이토 게이카쿠의 이름을 알리게 되었다. 하지만 이토 게이카쿠는 2009년 3월에 폐암으로 사망하여 이 상들을 수상했을 때는 이미 고인이 되어 있었다. 『하모니』의 영문 번역판이 Philip K. Dick Award의 특별상을 수상하였지만, 이 또한 뒤늦은 영광이었다. 이렇게 이토 게이카쿠는 3년이 채 안 되는 활동기간 동안 장편 세 편과 단편집 한 권만을 남기고 세상을 떠났지만, 다양한 수상 이력에서 알 수 있듯이 소설의 작품성 때문에 2000년대 일본 SF 소설계에 강렬한 인상을 남긴 작가로 높은 평가를 받고 있다. 본고는 『하모니』를 인류가 질병을 극복해 온 역사와 개인의 자유에 대한 통제라는 관점에서 다시 읽기를 시도하였다. 그 결과, 먼저 나치의 질병 예방 정책에서 알 수 있듯이 공동체를 질병과 같은 위험으로부터 보호한다는 명목 하에 개인의 자유를 통제했던 역사적 사실이 있었고, 이러한 경향은 정도의 차이는 있어도 역사적으로 반복되고 있음을 확인하였다. 그 다음으로 일본에는 ‘공기’, 혹은 ‘동조 압력’이라는 문화가 존재하여 개인의 자유로운 판단을 억압하고 자신을 드러내지 못하게 만드는 부작용이 존재함을 고찰하였다. 『하모니』의 세계에서 전반적으로 느껴지는 갑갑함은 이러한 사회·문화적 요인에 기인하는 바가 크다. 마지막으로 과학 기술의 발전, 지식의 진보는 인간 존엄성의 확립, 정치 제도의 발전, 도덕·규범의 발전을 이끌지만, 반대로 인간의 주체성과 자유를 축소시키기도 한다는 것을 살펴보았다. 『하모니』는 디스토피아적 미래를 그린 것에 가깝다고 생각되며, ‘공기’, ‘동조 압력’, 주체성의 상실, 표현의 자유의 제한 등 실체가 명확하지 않지만 개인의 자유를 억압하는 현대 일본 사회 특유의 감각을 세심하게 그려낸 소설이라 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

Born in Tokyo in 1974, Project Itoh -real name Satoshi Itō- graduated from the Faculty of Art at Musashino University and made his debut as a writer in 2007 with Genocidal Organ. In 2008, he published his second novel, Harmony, which won the 30th Nihon SF Taisho Award and the 40th Seiun Award in 2009, making Project Itoh’s name a widely known one in the field of Japanese literature. However, he died of lung cancer in March 2009, before he received these awards. The English translation of Harmony received a Philip K. Dick Award special citation, but this was also a posthumous honor. Project Itoh passed away, leaving only three novels and one book of short stories written over a period of less than three years. However, as can be seen from the several awards he received, he is highly regarded as a writer who had a strong influence on Japanese science fiction of the 2000s because of the quality of his novels. This paper re-reads Harmony from the perspective of the history of mankind overcoming disease and the imposition of control over individual freedom. As shown in the disease prevention policy carried out by the Nazis, historically, individual freedom has been controlled in the name of protecting the community from risks such as disease, and this tendency has been repeated in history to varying degrees. This fact plays a role in Harmony, as it shows how a judgmental culture involving peer pressure exists in Japanese society, which has the negative effect of suppressing the free thinking and self-expression of individuals. The overall suffocating atmosphere felt in the world of Harmony is largely attributable to these socio-cultural factors. In addition, this paper analyzes how the novel demonstrates that the development of science and technology and the advancement of knowledge has lead to the establishment of greater human dignity and the development of civilized political institutions and moral norms, but conversely they also have the capacity to reduce human autonomy and freedom. Harmony, a novel that depicts a dystopian future, meticulously captures the unique climate of modern Japanese society that suppresses individual freedom through a constricting atmosphere and peer pressure, fosters the loss of individual identity, and restricts freedom of expression, even though the existence of these problems is not clearly perceived.
