전남지역 학도병의 의의와 호국정신 함양

국문 초록

6·25전쟁 당시 183명의 전남지역 학도병들은 극도의 열악한 조건속에서 단 9일 간의 기초훈련만 받고 M1소총에 의지하여 북한군의 진로를 차단하기 위하여 급히 하동 화개전투에 투입되었다. 이 전투에서학도중대는 70명이 전사 또는 실종됐으나, 적군의 침공을 적어도 12시간 이상 지연시키는 전과를 거두었다. 하동-진주-마산을 거쳐 부산 점령을 목표로 했던 북한군 정예군의 진로를 1주일 이상 지연시키는 결과를 가져왔고, 이는 낙동강 최후방어선 전열구축에 필요한 절체절명의시간을 확보하는 데 결정적인 기여를 했다. 한마디로 이들 학도병이 펼친 화개전투는 풍전등화의 위기에 처한 조국을 구하기 위하여 기꺼이희생한 위대한 영웅들의 스토리를 만들어 내었다. 한국전쟁사에 길이길이 남을만한 명장면이 아닐 수 없다. 학도병들이 감당한 ‘초과의무(supererogation)’는 시민사회의 성숙을 위해 반드시 필요한 덕목 중의 하나라는 점에서 학도병들의 영웅적인 활동상을 발굴하여 널리 선양하는 것은 매우 귀중한 일이 아닐 수 없다. 지금 우리는 북한의 핵·미사일 위협뿐만 아니라, 국내적으로도 사회적 갈등과 분열로 인하여 내적 안보위기를 겪고 있다. 이러한 때 호국정신이 절실함은 두말할 필요가 없다. 따라서 우리는 나라사랑교육 강화를 통해 학도병들의 영웅적업적과 희생정신을 강조하면서 호국정신을 함양하는 데 적극 활용할 필요가 있다. 이 호국정신은 국민의 마음을 하나로 모으는 국민통합에 기여함으로써 우리의 내적 안보를 강화하고 평화통일을 앞당기는 훌륭한 소프트파워 국력이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

At the time of the Korean War, 183 student soldiers(14 to 17-year-old middle school and high school students) with the M1 rifle, after basic training in extreme harsh conditions for only 9 days, were put into the battle of Hwagae battles in order to cut off the course of the North Korean troops. In this battle, 70 student soldiers were killed or missing. But the battle lasted for at least 12 hours, delaying the enemy's invasion. This battle resulted in a delay of more than a week in the course of the North Korean elite military troop which aimed to occupy Busan through Hadong - Jinju - Masan. Thus, It made a decisive contribution to securing the necessary time for the construction of the Nakdong River last line of defense. In short, the Hwagae battle, a beautiful scenery that will lead for a long time to the Korean War history, has created a story of great heroes who were willing to sacrifice to save their homeland in crisis. Because 'supererogation' of student soldiers is one of the virtues necessary for the maturation of civil society, it is very important to uncover and broaden their heroic activities of the society. These days, we are facing not only North Korea's nuclear and missile threats but also domestic security crises due to social conflict and division. At this time, our society desperately needs the spirit to defend the country Therefore, we need to cultivate this spirit by emphasizing the heroic achievement and sacrifice spirit of the student soldiers through strengthening the patriotism education. This spirit to defend the country will be a great soft power to strengthen our internal security and accelerate peaceful reunification by contributing to the national integration that collects the hearts of the people.
