푸코를 읽는 한 가지 방법

국문 초록

오늘날 미셸 푸코(Michel Foucault;1926-1984)를 읽는 이유는 무엇인가? 우리는 푸코로부터 무엇을 배울 수 있는가? 푸코가 우리에게 전해주는 교훈은 두 가지이다. 첫째는 현재를 기준으로 한 역사적 방법론이고;둘째는 그의 끊임없는 비판정신이다. 그는 일관된 연구방법이나 주제를 거부하고 자신의 주장 역시 철저하게 비판받기를 원했다. 이러한 푸코의 태도를 본받아 우리는 ‘권력’이나 ‘주체’ 등과 같이 그를 평가하는 널리 알려진 기준들을 지양하고 새로운 접근법이나 연구 주제를 이끌어낼 필요가 있다. 이것이 우리가 오늘날에도 여전히 푸코를 읽어야 하는 이유이다. 푸코를 바라보는 여러 가지 방법들 중 필자가 주목한 방식은 그의 작업을 의학과 연결시켜 바라보는 것이다. 이는 푸코가 의학에 미친 영향력을 파악하는 데에 도움을 줄 수 있다. 푸코는 성;정신의학;양생 등과 같은 의학적 내용들을 자신의 연구 주제로 삼아 그것들이 사회적으로 어떻게 배치되었는지를 탐구했다. 이러한 푸코의 노력은 구체적으로 의학적 담론에 어떠한 성과들을 가져다주었을까? 이를 파악하는 작업은 의철학이 해야 할 여러 가지 일들 중 하나이다. ‘괴물’이라는 개념을 중심으로 푸코의 작업을 조르쥬 캉길렘의 그것과 비교해보면;괴물이라는 개념의 추이를 좇는 데에 관심을 두었던 캉길렘과는 달리 푸코는 괴물과 관련된 사회적 변화를 묘사하는 데에 중점을 두었다는 점을 알 수 있다. 결국 그는 물학적·의학적 주제들을 다뤘지만 궁극적으로 사회철학 혹은 역사철학의 범주 내에서 맴돌았다. 이를 통해서 우리는 역설적으로 그가 배제시킨 생리·병리학적 특징들을 ‘직접 마주할 수 있는’ 이론적 접근법에 대한 고민이 필요하다는 결론을 도출해낼 수 있다.

영문 초록

Why we read Michel Foucault? What can we learn from Foucault? Foucault teaches us two things. The first is historical methodology, and the second is his thorough criticism. Foucault refused consistent subject and wanted his opinion to be criticized like the other opinions. Now;we need follow his attitude. We should reject the old viewpoints like Power or Subject and value new approaches or research topics. This is why we still read Foucault. To match Foucault to medicine could be a way to read Foucault. This helps us to understand what Foucault brought to medicine. Eventually;this paper aims to suggest a new way of reading to Foucault from medical point of view. Foucault used medical contents as a base for his studies;but he didn't mention the physiological and pathological aspects of medical stuff. He just did research to find how those contents were arranged socially. What Foucault's works of medical subjects like Sex;Psychology;Madness;and Preservation achieved in medical field or medical discourse? To find out what it is is one of the responsibilities of the philosophy of medicine. How could the philosophy of medicine read Foucault? With the concept of Monster as the central figure;Foucault had interest to describe the social change associated with Monster;unlike Georges Canguilhem who was keen to follow the progress of the concept of Monster. Foucault remained in the region of social or historical philosophy. He excluded physiological and pathological features of medical contents whereby we design new theoretical or philosophical approaches that can directly grasp the medical contents directly.
