루소의 감정론에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 루소의 감정론을 자기사랑(amour de soi)과 자기애(amour-propre)를 중심으로 살피는 데 있다. 루소의 감정론의 핵심에는 자기사랑이 있다. 루소에게 자기사랑은 자신과의 관계 속에서 자기보존에 주의를 기울이게 하는 원초적인 ‘좋은 감정’인데 반해, 자기애는 사회적 차원에서 일어나는 자기사랑의 파생적인 감정으로, 타인과의 비교에서 자부심과 허영심으로 나타난다. 자기애는 악을 고취시킬 수 있는 정념이기에, 우리의 선을 보존하기 위해서는 가능한 한 욕구를 적게 갖고 타인과의 비교를 적게 해야 한다. 그러나 루소의 자기사랑은 단순히 비교 자체를 불허하는 것만으로 획득될 수는 없다. 양심과 같은 내적 감정의 발달은 선과 악을 식별하고 비교하는 이성의 개입에 의해서만 가능하기 때문이다. 그러니까 루소의 자기사랑은 어떤 비교를 허락하지 않는 것이 아니라, 비교가 낳을 수 있는 자기애라는 감정에 함몰되지 않는, 비교에 ‘자유로운’ 것이다. 한편 자기애에 대한 루소의 지배적인 평가는 부정적이다. 그러나 ‘자기애’를 방편적으로 이용하는 것이 불가능하지 않고, 평등한 동료들과 공유하는 자비와 인류애와 같은 강렬한 감정에 의할 경우에는 자기애는 선한 경향성으로서 변화될 가능성이 있으며, 그러한 조건 아래에서는 공적인 승인에 대한 욕구 또한 상대적으로 덜 위험할 수 있다. 물론 이 때조차도 자기애는 악을 하지 않고서는 선을 행하는 일이 거의 없는 위험한 도구라는 것을 간과하지 않아야 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine Rousseau’s theory of emotion by focusing on amour de soi and amour-propre. At the heart of Rousseau’s theory of emotion is amour de soi. For Rousseau, amour de soi is an original “good feeling” that draws attention to self-preservation, whereas amour-propre is a derivative emotion of amour de soi, which arises from comparison with others as pride or vanity. Amour-propre is a passion that can inspire evil, therefore, to preserve our goodness, we need to reduce our desires and adopt a way of life that is as uninvolved with comparing ourselves to others as possible. However, Rousseau’s amour de soi cannot be achieved simply by not making the comparison itself. This is because the development of inner emotions, such as conscience, is possible only through the intervention of reason, which recognizes and compares good and evil. Thus, Rousseau’s amour de soi does not mean that it does not allow any comparison, but rather that it is not immersed in the amour-propre that the comparison can produce. Although Rousseau’s dominant evaluation of amour-propre is negative, it is not impossible to use the positive aspects of amour-propre educationally. Rousseau’s amour-propre is a dangerous tool in general, but it has the potential to be transformed into a good inclination when driven by strong, good emotions such as compassion and humanity shared with equal peers. Under such conditions, the desire for public approval may also be relatively less risky. However, we must not overlook that amour-propre is a dangerous tool that rarely does good without doing evil.
