중장년의 창업 결정 및 과정에 대한 질적연구

국문 초록

이 연구는 중장년 창업가의 창업 결정 및 준비 과정을 심층적으로 이해하고 중장년 창업을 촉진하기 위한 제언을 제시하기 위한 목적에서 수행되었다. 연구대상은 서울시 내 창업 지원기관에 입주한 경험이 있는 40~64세 중장년 창업가이며, 연령, 성별, 업종 등을 고려하여 7명에 대해 심층 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 1:1 인터뷰를 통해 창업 동기, 특성, 창업 과정 및 중장년 창업 정책에 대한 인식을 분석하였다. 연구를 통해 도출한 주요 결론 및 제언은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 중장년의 창업 동기에는 직업 경력과 전문성이 기저에 존재했다. 중장년은 이전 경력에서 형성한 전문성과 역량을 계속 유지하고 발휘할 수 있는 기회로 창업을 선택하는 경우가 많았으며, 이는 청년 창업가와 다른 중요한 특징이었다. 둘째, 중장년 창업가들은 기업가정신을 바탕으로 생애 기회를 고려하여 창업을 시작하는 모습을 보였다. 이들은 주된 일자리에서 완전히 은퇴한 뒤 창업하기 보다 창업 시장에서 경쟁력을 가질 수 있는 연령대에 창업을 시작하고 있었다. 셋째, 중장년 창업가들은 정보 부족, 가족의 반대 등 부정적 상황에서도 적극적으로 자신에게 맞는 창업 지원 기관 및 사업을 탐색하고 참여함으로써 비즈니스 모델을 고도화하는 모습을 보였다. 넷째, 중장년의 특성에 기초한 지원 확대를 요구하고 있었다. 구체적으로 시장성과 타당성 등에 대한 성찰을 통해 비즈니스 모델을 고도화하고 공간 지원, 지원 사업에 대한 중장년 참여 기회 확대를 제안하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to in-depth understanding of the start-up decision and process of middle-aged entrepreneurs and to suggest policies for promoting middle-aged start-up. The subjects of this study were middle-aged entrepreneurs aged 40-64 who had experience using the residency service of a start-up support organization in Seoul, and in-depth interviews were conducted with 7 people in consideration of age, gender, and industry. Through a 1:1 interview, we analyzed the entrepreneurial motives, characteristics, start-up process, and perceptions of middle-aged entrepreneurship support policies. The main conclusions and recommendations drawn from the study are as follows. First, vocational experience and professionalism were the basis for the entrepreneurial motives of middle-aged adults. Middle-aged entrepreneurs often choose to start a business as an opportunity to continue and develop the expertise they have formed in their previous careers, which is an important characteristic different from young entrepreneurs. Second, middle-aged entrepreneurs started their business by considering life opportunities based on entrepreneurship. Rather than starting a business after fully retiring from their main job, they were starting their own business at an age where they could be competitive in the start-up market. Third, even in negative situations such as lack of information and opposition from family, middle-aged entrepreneurs actively search for and participate in start-up support organizations that are suitable for them, thereby enhancing their business models. Fourth, it was demanding to expand support based on the characteristics of the middle-aged. Specifically, it was proposed to upgrade the business model through reflection on market performance and feasibility, and to expand opportunities for middle-aged participation in space and support projects.
