국문 초록

제4차 산업혁명이 도래한 지금, 급격한 속도로 발전하고 있는 AI 기술은 현재 우리의 삶에 깊이 관여하고 있으며 여러 가지 긍정적 요소들과 함께 여러 가지 문제 또한 야기하고 있다. 그러므로 이 논문은 2020년 2월, 교황청 생명학술원에서 발표한 ｢AI 윤리에 관한 로마의 호소｣에 대해 살펴봄으로써 인간의 삶에 직접적 영향을 끼치는 현대과학기술에 대한 교회의 관점과 그 전망을 제시하는 데에 목적이 있다. 과학기술은 표면적으로는 인간의 삶을 풍요롭게 하는 중립적인 수단으로 보이지만 개발과 사용에 있어 윤리적 원칙이 결여되어 있을 경우 인간의 삶에 부정적인 영향을 끼칠 수 있으며 실제로 그러한 문제들이 발생하고 있다. 산업혁명으로 대표되는 인간 삶의 변혁 앞에서 여러 사회회칙과 가르침들을 통해 올바른 방향을 제시해 온 교회는, 최근 현대의 AI 기술에 있어서도 마찬가지로 목소리를 내기 시작하였다. ｢AI 윤리에 관한 로마의 호소｣는 그 구체적인 시작점이 된다는 것에서 의미 있는 문서라 할 수 있다. 이 문서는 AI 기술이 어떠한 방식으로 개발되고 사용되어야 하는지 이야기한다. 특별히 AI가 인간의 삶에 영향을 미치는 세 가지 영역인 윤리, 교육, 권리를 다루고 있으며 이를 바탕으로 투명성과 포용성, 책임감, 공정성, 신뢰성, 보안과 사생활 보호 등의 구체적인 원칙들을 제시한다. 이를 통해 우리는 과학기술의 개발이 기초적인 사회교리 원칙인 인간의 존엄성과 공동선, 연대성 등을 바탕으로 이뤄져야 함을 알게 되며 아무리 뛰어난 과학기술이라 할지라도 인간은 이를 사용하는데 있어 주인의 자리에 머물러야 한다는 것을 깨닫게 된다. 인간이 만들어낸 도구는 결국 인간 스스로에게 영향을 주게 되어 있으며 내부적인 변화를 일으키므로 이에 대한 구체적인 의식과 책임감이 필요하기 때문이다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 AI로 인해 현대 사회에서 마주하게 되는 문제들과 기술 자체에 대한 윤리학적 고찰을 시도하고 이를 바라보는 교회의 시선을 분석하고자 한다. 이후, ｢AI 윤리에 관한 로마의 호소｣를 면밀히 검토함으로써 현대의 과학기술에 있어 반드시 고려해야 할 윤리적 원칙들을 발견하고자 한다. 한편, 이 문서는 AI에 대해 심도 깊은 신학적 고찰을 하기 보다는 보편적 견지에서의 AI 윤리를 다루고 있다. 그러한 점에서 보다 깊이 있는 신학적 논의와 앞으로 파생될 다양한 분야의 문제들은 큰 과제로 남아있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 현대 기술에 있어서 지켜져야 할 기초적 윤리 원칙들을 제공하고 앞으로 이루어질 논의에 대한 기틀을 마련한 문서라는 점에서 매우 시의성이 있다.

영문 초록

With the advent of the 4th industrial revolution, AI technology, which is developing at a rapid pace, is deeply involved in our lives now and is causing various problems along with various positive factors as well. Therefore, this thesis present the Church s perspective on modern science and technology that directly affects human life and its prospects by examining “Rome Call for AI Ethics” presented by the Pontifical Academy for Life in February 2020. Although science and technology seem to be a neutral means of enriching human life on the surface, if it lacks ethical principles in development and use, it can negatively affect human life, and such problems are actually occurring. The Church, which has been providing the right direction through various social rules and teachings in the face of the transformation of human life represented by the Industrial Revolution, has recently begun to speak out on modern AI technology as well. “Rome Call for AI Ethics” is a meaningful document in that it serves as a concrete starting point. This document talks about how AI technologies should be developed and used. In particular, it deals with the three areas where AI affects human life: ethics, education, and rights. Based on this, concrete principles such as transparency and inclusion, responsibility, impartiality, reliability, security and privacy are presented. Through this, we learn that the development of human technology should be based on basic social doctrine principles of the Church such as human dignity, common good, and solidarity, and that no matter how excellent science technology is, humans should remain as its masters in using it. The tools created by humans are supposed to affect themselves in the end and cause internal changes, so specific consciousness and responsibility are needed. To this end, this thesis attempts an ethical consideration on the problems encountered in modern society due to AI and the technology itself, and analyzes the Church’s perspective on it. Afterwards, by closely examining “Rome Call for AI Ethics”, we intend to discover ethical principles that must be considered in modern science and technology. On the other hand, this document deals with AI ethics from a universal perspective rather than a theological consideration on AI. In this regard, more in-depth theological discussions and problems in various fields to be derived in the future remain a big task. Nevertheless, it is very timely in that it is a document that provides basic ethical principles to be observed in modern technology and provides a framework for future discussions.
