영문 초록

In this paper, the researcher attempted to discover the consciousness of the writer, Kim Sang-heon, based on the several distinctive features recorded in the Namsarok. Kim Sang-heon was deployed to Jeju Island at his age of 32 in order to serve the temporary official mission. For Gil Un-jeol, who was a native of Jeju Island, surrendered himself to the local authority of commandery amid plot manipulations against the state, he was to undertake the fact-finding mission on the incident, while quieting the inhabitants in Jeju Island, and also to impart the fact that the voice and rule of the King were exercising a great influence on the island and the people as well. He made records of daily proceedings for six months, from his departure of the capital city until the time of making the final report of his mission. This journal was dubbed “Namsarok.” In this paper, the researcher aimed to investigate the consciousness of the writer, Kim Sang-heon, that appeared in those records with a focus on the three distinctive features of Jeju Island described in Namsarok. First, recording such an outlandish phenomenon as ‘A notion of preferring a son to a daughter’ of the society where a universally accepted idea of the time such as, ‘A notion of preferring a daughter to a son’ was not applied, underlie the writer’s social consciousness to accuse the reality of evil practices of taxes and public imposts that perpetrated on Jeju Island at those days. Second, through factual records of the crater lake, Baengnokdam, on top of Mt. Halla, the highest peak in the Korean peninsula, except Mt. Baekdu, the writer, Kim Sang-heon, exhibits his spiritual stance in making records of true historical events, having never admitted any exaggerations or romantic elaborations. Third, by recording the divinity of Moheunghyeol (legendary holes where three divine men emerged from; currently called Samseonghyeol), which is the proud of Jeju Island, Kim Sang-heon reveals his historical consciousness that makes the readers aware of the facts that Jeju is not merely an island, but the people living in there are superior having resplendent history from time immemorial. Through these records, the researcher attempted to identify the fact that Namsarok is an outcome of the consciousness of the writer, Kim Sang-heon, that goes beyond the characteristics of a simple account of his trip to Jeju Island.
