영문 초록

The main purpose of this paper is to show that Yak-young Jeong s art theory has the characteristic of a subtle combination of body and soul. Previous studies have defined Yak-young Jeong s calligraphy, and painting as realism or spiritualism. To be sure, it is possible that the art theory is able to be defined as realism in that it is based on reality and actuality and as spiritualism on the basis on spirit instead of form. But, these views seem to throw off their balance in the light of the fact that although Yak-young Jeong stresses on value of spirit, he grasps spirit as being relative to form, a subtle combination of body and soul. In this paper, I suggest Yak-young Jeong s art theory is the subtle combination of body and soul s theory in that it ultimately aims to reveal the spirit through the forms of reality and actuality. Yak-young Jeong s art theory seems to be important in the field of the artistic discussion these days, for the following reasons; first, it helps to expand our horizons of awareness about works of artists in the late Joseon Dynasty period, second, it shows that art can not be recognized just as aiming at beauty of forms, as well as a mean to emphasize on spirituality.
