영문 초록

Lee Deok-mu(李德懋) was recognized by his contemporary writers as a brilliant critic, and Lee’s own sense of pride too was known to be great. His interest in criticism of commentaries(評點批評) in particular started from the late teens; in his 20s he was immersed in criticism of commentaries, and after the 30s he reached a peak of being a full-blown critic of commentaries, which continued to his last years. Active criticism of commentaries by Lee Deok-mu included various fields of literature such as collections of poems, chidu(尺牘), travelogues and collections of prose. There are a total of 10 works confirmed as Lee’s criticism of commentaries to date. The background of how Lee Deok-mu was able to engage in criticism of commentaries can be understood in two aspects: First, as for the domestic reason, it was active “mutual criticism” that prevailed during the late Joseon Dynasty among the literary circle Dongin(同人). In the late Joseon Dynasty, writers of the Dongin group were very active in making books of critical commentaries(評選本) by adding scores(評點) in each others’ collections of writings. Especially with Yeonam Park Ji-won(燕巖 朴趾源) being the center of his namesake Yeonam group were critics that if one writer’s writing was released, they passed it around to write in criticism and add prefaces, and then next readers would write in additional criticism was very common, and at the center of such critical activities was Lee Deok-mu. It can be said that it was this atmosphere of the time in which Lee’s criticism of commentaries was established. Second, as for the external reason, it was Lee’s intensive reading of the Chinese book of criticism, “The Reading of the Fiction Commentary(小說評批本)” by critic Kim Shengtan(金聖嘆) in particular, which was then famous in literary circles. Lee Deok-mu read “The Reading of the Fiction Commentary” intensively and left behind a considerable number of records on it. Of which he wrote favorable comments on Jin Shengtan’s talent and his discerning eyes for criticism. and there were also examples in which Lee quoted exact phrases of Jin’s criticism. This showed that Lee Deok-mu was quite favorable to Jin Shengtan’s criticism. Moreover, there were cases where some writers at the time evaluated that Lee Deok-mu’s writing style was criticized as the influence of Jin Shengtan, so it seems that it was true that Lee was influenced by Jin. Therefore, it can be understood that Lee Deok-mu’s activities in criticism of commentaries were the result of actively embracing the atmosphere of the literary circles at the time, including intensive reading of Chinese imported books of critical scores(評點書) and Jin Shengtan s book of commentaries from the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
