『杻山文稿』에 나타난 李友信의 文論 硏究

국문 초록

李友信이 살았던 18세기 후반은 文을 대상으로 다양하고 세부적인 논의가 이루어지고 문학적 관념에 나름의 다양성이 작용하던 시기였다. 이우신은 어려서부터 金鑢를 비롯하여 다수의 소품체 작가들과 긴밀하게 교유하며 문학적 활동을 전개해 나갔는데, 유가적 가치를 추구하고 도학자의 삶을 살았던 그의 행력에 비추어 볼 때, 이와 같은 문학 활동은 다소 이해하기 어려운 점이 있다. 본고에서는 이우신이 소품체 작가들과 교유했던 시기의 작품과, 도학적 이념을 기반으로 활동한 시기의 작품에 주목하였다. 먼저 문학에 대한 태도의 변화에 있어서 그 계기가 드러난 작품과 작품에 드러난 표현을 대상으로 하여 문학적 경향이 변하게 된 양상을 살펴보고, 이후 文에 대한 그의 인식을 파악하기 위해 『杻山文稿』에 실려 있는 산문 작품을 분석하였다. 『杻山文稿』에는 이우신의 작품 22편과 편찬자인 김려의 발문을 포함하여 총 23편의 산문이 실려 있다. 이우신이 많은 작품을 남기지는 못했지만 唐宋의 문풍을 뛰어넘어 先秦兩漢의 문풍을 따라 司馬遷, 董仲舒 등과 비견할 정도라고 칭술한 김려의 말에서 이우신의 문학이 어떤 노선을 취하고 있는지를 짐작할 수 있다. 『杻山文稿』에 실려 있는 산문 중에 ‘文’을 주제로 한 논변을 중심으로 하여 이우신이 생각하는 道와 文의 관계 설정에 대하여 살펴보았다. 그는 道를 토대로 하면서 文의 사회적 기능도 중시하였는데, 이는 학문이라는 개인적인 영역에서 道의 실천이라는 사회적인 영역으로 文의 기능을 확장한 것으로 보인다. 편지글에서는 이우신이 文을 거론한 부분을 발췌하여 文에 대한 그의 관점을 파악하고자 하였다. 科擧 공부를 위한 문장을 지양하고, 자아성찰과 내면수양의 수단으로 文을 정의한 것은 文을 통해 道를 밝힐 수 있다는 입장을 기반으로 언급한 것이다. 이우신의 문학 중 일부의 시 작품을 근거로 작가의 문학적 관점을 소품적 문학으로 속단할 수 없다. 작가의 생애와 과도기적 사건, 또는 이에 따른 심경 변화가 나타난 작품을 통하여 총체적으로 접근할 필요가 있다. 문장을 수식하는 데에 치중했던 지난날의 태도를 반성하고, 文을 통해 도를 밝히고 발현해야 한다는 이우신의 견해를 반영하여 그의 문학적 관념을 재설정할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

The late 18th century in which Lee Usin(李友信) lived was a time of significant change in literary concept and also that of diverse, intensive debates in writings. He had conducted his literary activities, closely interacting with a number of vignette style writers from his young days. However, considering his life as a Neo-Confucianism master and a moralist, this kind of his literary activities is quite unconvincing. This study focuses on his works, particularly written in his early years in which he used to interact with vignette style writers and the later years in which he used to concentrate on ethics ideology. The aspect of changes in his literary tendency was examined to see the change appeared in his attitude toward literature, targeting his works and description showing the trigger of such changes. Then in order to figure out his cognition of writings, his prose in 『Yoosanmoongo(杻山文稿)』 was also analyzed. There are 23 prose writings in 『Yoosanmoongo(杻山文稿)』; 22 were written by Lee Usin and 1epilogue was written by the compiler, Kim Ryeo. Although Lee Usin didn t leave many works, it is not difficult to presume his literary direction thanks to Kim Ryeo s compliments saying that Lee Usin surpasses the writing style of China s Tang and Sung Dynasty, and is even comparable to Sima Qian and Dong Zhongshu along with the writing style of Pre-Qin and Han. This study examined the relationship between Tao(道) and Literature (文) set by Lee Usin, based on literature(文)-themed arguments in his prose out of the works contained in 『Yoosanmoongo(杻山文稿)』. Basically placing emphasis on Tao, he also regarded the social function of literature(文), and this implies that he tried to expand the function of literature(文) from individual academic sphere to common, social sphere. The study also looked into his point of view on literature(文) by extracting his mentions about it from his letter writing. He defined literature(文) as the means to avoid writings for Gwageo and achieve introspection and inner self-improvement; this is based in his point of view supporting that it is possible to clarify Tao(道) through literature(文). We should not make a hasty conclusion to consider his literary perspective as vignette style only based on parts of his works in his early days. Instead, it is needed to approach holistically, looking into the writer s life, transitional event, or consequent change of his mind. Now it is necessary to set his literary concept by taking his view of the later years to reflect on the traditional attitude sticking to embellishment of writing and to realize Tao(道) through literature(文) into account.
