凝窩 李源祚의 관료적 삶과 한시

국문 초록

본고는 1792년(정조 16) 경상북도 성주에서 태어나 1871년(고종 8) 세상을 떠날 때까지 생애의 대부분을 19세기를 살다간 19세기 영남 지역의 대표적인 유학자 중 한사람이었던 凝窩 李源祚에 대한 연구가 대단히 소홀하다는 사실에 주목하였다. 응와는 1809년(순조 9) 18세의 어린 나이로 문과에 급제하여 영남 학자로는 보기 드물게 경주부윤․공조판서․판의금부사 등 고위 관직을 역임하였으며, 20대 초반부터 80세를 일기로 세상을 떠날 때까지 약 60여년을 관직에 종사하였다. 뿐만 아니라 한말 성리학계의 대표적 학자 한주 이진상(1818∼1886)의 숙부로 한주의 학자적 삶에 있어서 중요한 역할을 하였던 인물이다. 그러나 이원조의 삶과 성취는 물론, 19세기 영남을 대표하는 관료로 주목하면서도 관료로서의 구체적 삶에 대한 연구 역시 아직 소략한 실정이다. 응와가 영남 남인 출신으로 노론집권기라는 특수한 시대적 상황 속에서 오랫동안 관료로 활동했다는 점에서 그의 관료적 삶을 검토하는 것은 중요한 문제가 아닐 수 없다. 그는 순조 대에서 고종 대에 걸쳐 벼슬하며, 만년에는 품계가 종1품에 이르렀지만 관직의 명예만 따랐을 뿐 실제로 자신의 능력을 조정에서 발휘할 기회를 제대로 갖지 못하였다. 다만 다섯 차례에 걸쳐 지방의 수령으로 재직하면서 경륜의 포부를 펼칠 수 있었던 바, 60평생을 조적에 이름을 올리고 있었던 위정자의 한사람으로서 민생의 안정에 대한 책임을 자임하였으며, 당시 사회의 병폐를 해부하여 적폐세력의 반성적 성찰을 유도하였던 것을 그의 문학 작품을 통해 확인할 수 있었다. 남다른 재주와 평생에 걸친 노력에도 권력의 중심에서 비껴 있던 그의 출신 성분은 시대적인 한계를 완전히 극복할 수 없었던 것이다.

영문 초록

Eungwa(凝窩) Lee Won-jo(李源祚) was one of the most representative Confucian scholars of Youngnam region in the 19th century. He was born in Seongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do in the King Jeong Jo 16 years(1792) and he lived most of his life in the 19th century until his death in the King Go Jong 8 years(1871). This paper focuses on the fact that research on Lee Won-jo is very neglected. Eungwa passed the state examination at the age of 18, and he served in high-ranking government positions, such as the Gyeongju Buyun, Gongjopanseo and Panuigeumbusa, that was rare for a Yeongnam scholar. He spent about 60 years in public office from his early 20s to his death at the age of 80. Besides, he was uncle of Hanju Lee Jin-sang(1818~1886) who was a representative Neo-Confucianism scholar at the end of the Joseon Dynasty, so Eungwa played an important role in the scholarly life of Hanju. However, while paying attention to Lee Won-jo’s life and achievements as well as him as a representative bureaucrat of Youngnam region in the 19th century, specific research on his life as a bureaucrat is still insufficient. It is important to consider his bureaucratic life in that he served as a bureaucrat for a long time in a special circumstances called the Noron regime, despite being from Yeongnam Namin. He entered into government service from King Sun Jo to King Go Jong. In the decline of his life, degree of his official rank reached the first grade[從一品], but he only followed the honor of the public office and did not really have the opportunity to demonstrate his ability in the Royal Court. When he served as the head of the local government five times, he was able to fulfill his ambition. As one of the politician who had been listed on the Royal Court register for 60 years, he took responsibility for the stability of the people’s livelihoods. Through his literary works, it could be confirmed that he induced deep-rooted evils to take the reflective introspection by dissecting the malady of society at that time. Even his extraordinary talents and lifelong endeavors, his origins off-center of power could not completely overcome the limits of the times.
