영성관광의 개념화에 대한 재고(再考)

국문 초록

목적: 본 연구의 목적은 관광학적 맥락에서 영성관광을 재개념화하는데 있다. 해외에서는 영성관광에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있는 가운데, 국내에서는 영성관광의 개념화조차 제대로 이루어지지 않고 있다. 국내 영성관광의 활발한 연구를 위해 영성관광 개념화에 대한 재고찰을 하였다. 방법: 영성관광에 대한 심도 깊은 이해를 위해 영성의 개념, 영성의 등장배경, 영성 추구의 혜택에 대해 설명했고, 선행연구에서 시도되었던 영성관광의 개념화 시도를 한 논문에 대한 분석을 시도하였다. 결과: 선행연구에서 보여주고 있는 영성관광의 개념화는 여전히 종교관광과 구분되지 못 하고 종교관광의 범위 안에서 시도되고 있었다. 종교적 동기에 의해 행해지는 관광은 종교관광의 테두리 안에서 연구가 되고, 영성관광은 영성을 추구하는 것에 초점을 맞추어 연구가 되어야 한다. 연구가 누적될수록, 영성관광의 개념은 더 정교해지고 있는 가운데, 영성관광의 종교관광의 한 부분이 아닌 관광의 한 유형으로 보기 위해서는 영성관광의 핵심적인 동기인, 초월성과 삶의 목적/의미를 중심으로 재개념화할 필요가 있다. 결론: 본 연구를 통하여 국내 관광학계에 영성관광에 대해 잘 알리는 계기를 마련할 수 있을 것이며, 국내에서도 영성관광의 개념화 및 방법론, 또 영성관광객을 대상으로 한 경험론적 연구가 활발하게 진행될 수 있는 밑거름이 될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 국내에는 템플스테이라는 영성관광의 대표적인 사례가 있다. 기존에는 템플스테이가 문화관광, 종교관광 등 유사한 다른 관광유형으로 분류되었으나 앞으로는 영성관광의 테두리 안에서 활발하게 연구가 되어질 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Purpose: The goal of this research is to rethink spiritual tourism in a tourism context. While research on spiritual tourism is being conducted actively in other countries, conceptualization of spiritual tourism is not being done properly in Korea. In order to conduct active research on spiritual tourism in Korea, the concept of spiritual tourism was reconsidered. Methods: For a more in-depth understanding of spirituality tourism, the concept of spirituality, the history of spirituality, and the benefits of spirituality pursuit were explained, and an analysis of a paper that attempted to conceptualize spirituality tourism was attempted. Results: The conceptualization of spiritual tourism shown in previous studies was still not distinguished from religious tourism and was being attempted within the scope of religious tourism. Spiritual tourism should not be studied within the boundaries of religious tourism, while spiritual tourism should be studied with a focus on pursuing spirituality. As research accumulates, the concept of spiritual tourism becomes more sophisticated, and in order to see it as a type of tourism, rather than a subset of religious tourism, it is necessary to reconceptualize it, focusing on transcendence and the purpose/meaning of life. Conclusion: It is expected that this study will provide an opportunity to promote spiritual tourism to domestic tourism academia, and that conceptualization and methodology of spiritual tourism in Korea, as well as empirical research on spiritual tourists, will be actively conducted. Temple Stay, a type of spiritual tourism in Korea, is a good example. Temple stays were previously classified as similar types of tourism, such as cultural tourism and religious tourism, but in the future, they will be actively researched within the boundaries of spiritual tourism.
