국문 초록

‘재가승(在家僧)’은 조선 후기 함경도 북부 두만강 유역과 인근 산간 지방에 세거하였던 이들로 옛 6진(鎭) 지역인 경원(慶源), 경흥(慶興), 부령(富寧), 온성(穩城), 종성(種城), 회령(會寧)을 근거지로 삼고 있었다. 재가승에 대한 본격적인 소개와 그들이 특수한 문화를 지니고 있다는 인식을 심어 준 것은 일제강점기 조선인의 인류학적 기원을 찾기 위한 과정에서부터 시작되었다. ‘재가승’은 ‘일반적’인 조선인과 대비되는 ‘특별한’ 존재라는 점이 강조된 측면이 있다. 본고에서는 이러한 ‘여진족의 후예’라는 재가승의 민족적인 구분과 특수성이 만들어지는 과정을 살펴보았다. 조선 후기부터 현대에 이르기까지 만들어진 재가승의 기록들을 검토한 이후 이들이 조선사회에 어떻게 융화되고 공존할 수 있었는지 그들의 사회경제적 역할과 활동을 통해 확인하였다. 또한 국가의 입장에서도 이들이 독특한 풍습을 이어가는 한편으로 국역 체계 안에 어떻게 포함시키고 공(公)적 역할을 부여했는지를 살펴봄으로서 재가승에 대한 이해를 넓히고자 하였다.

영문 초록

Chaegasung lived in the Tuman River basin and nearby mountainous regions in the northern part of Hamgyeong-do in the late Chosŏn Dynasty, and was based on Gyeongwon, Gyeongheung Buryung, Onseong, Jongseong, and Hoeryeong. The full-fledged introduction to them and the recognition of having a special culture began with the process of finding the anthropological origins of the Japanese colonial era Koreans. There is an aspect that emphasizes that “Chaegasung” is a “special” existence in contrast to “general” Koreans. In this paper, beyond the image of descendants of the Jurchen tribe, which has emphasized the national distinction and specificity of the monks, I looked at the aspects of the monks in the late Joseon Dynasty in a special environment. After reviewing the records of Buddhist monks made from the late Chosŏn Dynasty to the present era, it confirmed the socioeconomic roles and activities of how they were able to harmonize and coexist in Chosŏn society. In addition, from the standpoint of the state, I would like to examine how they continued their unique customs and gave them a public role in the national translation system.
