조호익 『역상설(易象說)』의 역학사상과 그 위상

국문 초록

본 연구는 조선 전기 조호익의 『역상설』에 나타난 상수역학적 특징을 조선시대 역학의 다원론적 관점에 기초하여 조선의 주역경학사의 한 흐름을 연구한 것이다. 조호익이 수행했던 『주역』의 석해(釋解)는 한국의 역사 이래로 구결과 현토 등을 통해 중국과 차별화하는 조선 특유의 학술현상이며, 비록 그의 『주역석해(周易釋解)』가 현재 전하지 않는다 하더라도, 이황의 문도로서 퇴계학파에서 처음 시도했던 주역언해의 학통을 계승한 것이라는 점에서 의의가 있다. 조호익의 석해 저작은 이황의 사후에 교정청에서 언해사업을 담당하는 당상관으로 임명된 일을 계기로 시작된 것이고, 스승인 이황의 『사서삼경석의』 저작시기와 40여 년의 거리가 있는 것이어서 만약 오늘까지 전해졌다면 언어학사의 좋은 자료가 되었을 것이다. 『역상설』은 조호익의 연보에서 말한 것처럼 『주역석해』와 『역상설』이 모두 정이(程頤)의 역전(易傳)과 주희(朱熹)의 본의(本義)를 가지고 단상(彖象)을 발휘한 것이 정밀했다고 하니, 정이의 의리학과 주희의 상수학을 겸전하여 단상의 의미를 밝힌 것으로 볼 수 있다. 그의 『역상설』이 정이와 주희의 관점을 수용하여 단상을 설명한 책이라고 하지만, 해석방법론은 정이와 주희의 의리적 해석방법론을 부분적으로 계승하면서도 주로 상수역학의 해석방법으로 괘효사를 해석한다는 점에서 상수역학의 방향으로 한 단계 나아갔다고 할 수 있다. 조호익은 의리와 상수의 통합적 관점을 가지고, 상수적 방법론을 통해 의리를 밝히려는 목적의식이 분명 있었지만, 그가 사용한 해석방법론은 정이와 주희의 의리역학적 방법론으로서 중정(中正)과 비응(比應)론으로 괘효사를 해석하면서도 호체(互體)와 효변(爻變) 등 상수역학의 방법론을 주로 사용하였다. 『역상설』에서 조호익이 정주의 역학관점을 발휘했다고 하는 것은 정이의 의리적 목적의식과 주희의 점서(占筮) 원형에 대한 긍정의식을 발휘했다는 의미인 것이고, 그것을 발휘하는 데 사용한 방법론은 정이와 주희를 넘어 상수역학의 해석방법을 적극 수용했다는 것이다. 조호익의 이러한 상수학적 방법론은 조선 후기의 신후담, 정약용의 상수학적 방법론으로 이어지는 조선 전기의 중요한 매개이며, 조선의 역학사에서 최초로 거의 모든 취상(取象)의 방법론을 사용한 것이라고 할 것이다. 이것은 조선의 역학사에서 상(象)을 매개로 한 하나의 학술적 경향을 형성하는 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper is about the Learning of Meaning and Principle of his the Theory of the Images of Changes 易象說, focusing on Yi-ology of Cho Ho-ik in the early Joseon Dynasty. The Learning of Image and Number of Han Dynasty was strictly a combination of Learning of Image and Learning of Number, and after Song Dynasty, traditions with Learning of Number developed relatively independent of the Iconographic Image-numerology of Shao Kangjie and Zhu Xi, and the Learning of Image played a certain role and function in the large frame of Image and Number combined. Cho Ho-ik s interpretation of Guayao-ci 卦爻辭, such as Haoti 互體, Yao position 爻位, Yaobian 爻變, are typical interpretation frameworks of the Learning of Image. This is related to Zhu Xi s identification of the Zhou-yi 周易 as a Book on Divinations, highlighting the Image and Divination as the core values of the Zhou-yi, but showing that he is on a different line in interpreting the role than Zhu Xi, given that Divination is closely related to Learning of Number. In other words, if Zhu Xi wanted to restore the prototy pe as the Book on Divinations of the Zhou-yi, Cho Ho-ik wanted to reveal the righteous goal of the Image with a Iconographic methodology. Therefore, in the first place, Zhu Xi s purpose, and perhaps Lee Hwang s purpose will be the same as Zhu Xi s, but Cho Ho-ik s purpose is very different. What should be noted in Theory of the Images of Changes 易象說 is that it is following the flow of Yi-ology, which is different from that of Zhu Xi who has a different personality from that of the Official studies of Yuan Dynasty China. However, since both Hu Yi-jie 胡一桂 and Hu Bingwen 胡炳文 claim to inherit Zhu Xi s Yi-ology, it should be said that they inherit a separate character of Yi-ology that is different from the official studies within Zhu Xi s Yi-ology.
