국문 초록

2013년에 상영된 영화 리칭 포 더 문(Reaching for the Moon)은 브라질 감독 브루노 바레토(Bruno Barretto)가 연출을 맡은 작품으로 20세기 미국을 대표하는 여성 시인 엘리자베스 비숍(Elizabeth Bishop, 1911-1979)의 삶과 시를 조명하고 있다. 리칭 포 더 문은 레즈비언 시인 비숍이 40세가 되던 해인 1951년에 떠난 세계 여행 중 첫 여행지인 브라질에서 로타 소아레스(Lota de Macedo Soares)라는 여성 건축가를 만나 그녀와 운명적인 사랑에 빠지는 과정을 조명하고 있다. 로타와 함께 동거하며 사랑을 키워나갔던 사맘바이아(Samambaia)의 별장은 비숍이 일평생 열망했던 “원초적인 꿈의 집”(proto-dream house)이었다. 사맘바이아에서 비숍은 정서적 안정감과 더불어 로타와 함께 진정한 사랑을 발전시켜 나가면서 많은 훌륭한 시를 쓰게 된다. 요컨대, 비숍이 시적 상상력을 발현하여 훌륭한 시를 창출하게 한 원천은 다름 아닌 로타와의 동성애적 사랑, 즉 레즈비어니즘이다. 리칭 포 더 문에서 나오는 비숍의 여러 시들 중 ｢샴푸｣ (“The Shampoo”)와 ｢밤새도록 가까이, 가까이｣(“Close, close all night”)는 감각적인 영상과 맞물려 시인의 적나라한 동성애와 고착화된 젠더 이분법을 해체하는 성숙한 시각을 함축적으로 보여준다. 사맘바이아에서 비숍은 로타와 진정한 사랑을 키워나가면서 1955년에 첫 번째와 두번째 시집인 북과 남(North & South)과 차가운 봄(A Cold Spring)을 출판한다. 이 두 권의 시집으로 비숍은 다음 해에 퓰리처상을 수상함으로써 미국문학사에서 20세기 미국의 주요 시인으로 부상하게 된다. “나는 브라질 집-몸이 되어가는 것 같아요”라는 비숍의 고백은 로타와의 동성애가 시인에게 미친 지대한 영향력을 집약하는 표현이다. 이처럼 리칭 포 더 문은 브라질에서 역동적 뿌리내리기를 실천함으로써 점점 더 “브라질 집-몸”이 되어가는 비숍의 체화된 시각에서 연유한 탈경계적 비전을 감각적인 영상 언어로 재현해낸다. 비숍의 브라질 내부로의 문화적 몰입은 여행객과 아웃사이더의 시각에서 탈피하여 중심/주변, 문명/자연, 삶/죽음 등 이분법적 사유를 해체시키는 기반을 조성했다. 시인의 탈경계적 비전은 주변화된 타자들과 교감과 연대를 지향한다. 레즈비언 시인으로 정체성을 확립해나감으로써 비숍은 백인 남성중심주의에 근거한 이분법적 사유를 해체한 것이다. 따라서 영화의 오프닝과 엔딩 신에서 보여주는 ｢하나의 예술｣(“One Art”)이라는 시에서 “잃어버리는 기술은 숙달하기 어렵지 않다”(The art of losing isn’t hard to master)라는 시인의 통찰은 “오랜 정형화된 아이디어”에서 탈피함으로써 더욱 새롭고 성숙한 비전을 지니게 되었음을 보여주는 것이다.

영문 초록

A Brazilian filmmaker Bruno Barretto’s film Reaching for the Moon in 2013 well represents to shed light on the turbulent love affair of American poet Elizabeth Bishop starring in Miranda Otto and Brazilian architect Lota de Macedo Soares. As a lesbian poet, Bishop is believed to have three important partners who were Louise Crane, Lota de Macedo Soares and Alice Methfessel. Significantly, Reaching for the Moon focuses on Bishop’s long-time love affair with a Brazilian architect Lota Soares from 1951 when she planned to travel around the world at the age of 40. Soon after her arrival in Brazil, Bishop fell in love with Lota who is living in Samambaia in the mountains above Rio de Janeiro. Lota built a studio-like house in Samambaia for Bishop which was regarded as the “proto-dream house” in her poem. Bishop loved this “proto-dream house” so much so that she calls this house a real home. In the house, Bishop could make a lot of excellent poems and some of her love poems like “The Shampoo” and “Close, close all night” are displayed in the film. By regaining her mental and physical health and developing her love with Lota, Bishop published her first and second poetry collections like North & South and A Cold Spring in 1955 for which she was awarded a Pulitzer Prize. In short, the fundamental source which inspires Bishop to write a lot of excellent poems by stretching her imagination is her love with Lota. By staying in the “proto-dream house” with Lota, Bishop could turn a tourist or outsider’s perspective into an insider’s perspectives. It is important that her cultural immersion into Brazil paves the way for deconstructing the binary opposition like center/margin, civilization/nature, life/death. Bishop’s new vision derived from lesbianism and trans-boundary thinking goes toward connecting and communing with the marginalized others. For this reason, the film remarkably captures her well-known poem “One Art” in the opening and ending scene. Accordingly, Bishop’s new vision of “the art of losing isn’t hard to master” epitomizes that she could eliminate the “old stereotyped ideas” by acquiring the different values, behaviour, and everyday life of Brazilian culture.
