The fects of CO ₂ enrichment on growth ofmaize (Zea maysL.) were examined. Parameters analyzedinclude growth characteristics, yields, photosynthetic rates,evaporation rates and photosynthesis-related characteristicsunder elevated CO₂. The plants were grown in growth cham-bers with a 12-h photoperiod and a day/night emperatureof 28/21℃ at he seedling stage and 30/23℃ from the silking stage. The plants were exposed to two elevated CO₂of 500, 70 ppm and ambient levels (350 pm). Chalok 1and GCB 70 germinated three dmination rates were faster in the levated CO₂ than thecontrol. Germination rates displayed significant differencesamong the CO₂ treatments. At he seedling stage, leaf area,top dry weight, and photosynthetic rates, and plant heightindicated positive relationship with elevated CO2 concen-trations. At he 5~6 leaf stage, CO₂ concentration also in-dicated positive relationship with plant height, leaf area,top dry weight, and photosynthetic rates. At the silking stage,increased plant height of Chalok 1 was noted in the CO₂treatments compared to the control. No significant differencesphotosynthetic rates increased progressively with CO₂ con-centration. Stomatal aperture was a little biger in the levatedCO₂ than the control. CO₂ concentration was negatively relatedto stomatal conductance and transpiration rates, resulting inhigh water use efficiency.
