일제강점기 문헌을 중심으로 한 지리산국립공원의 시대적 상황 고찰

국문 초록

일제강점기 식물학자 나카이 다케노신(中井猛之進)과 제국대학 연습림 관계자가 기록한 지리산 관련 문헌(4권)을 통해 지리산을 둘러싼 시대적 상황을 고찰하고자 했다. 지리산 산중턱 또는 대략 해발 400m 내지는 700m부터 소나무림, 신갈나무림, 구상나무림 등이 양호하게 보전됐다는 점을 이 문헌의 식생분포도에서 확인할 수 있었다. 100여 년 전의 과거와 현재의 지리산 식생을 비교해 보면 식생 발달이 어떻게 진행됐는지를 알 수 있어 학술적 의미가 클 것이다. 지리산에 제국대학들이 연습림을 설치한 목적은 표면적으로 산림보호와 연구였지만, 연습림 경영을 통해 경제적 이익 추구 목적이 더 컸다. 지역민은 오랜 세월 지리산 환경에 적응해 목재와 임산물 채취 등 지리산이 베풀어주는 이로움을 기반으로 삶을 영위해왔다. 그런데 갑작스러운 연습림 설치로 인한 지리산 입산 제약과 이용 제한은 지역민들에게는 생활방식을 탈바꿈하게 되는 계기이자 핍박으로 다가왔을 것이다. 나카이가 식물을 채집했던 시기(1913년 이전)의 지리산은 숭배의 대상이라서 일반인이 깊은 산속까지 오르지 않았으며, 일부 유학자들은 심신수양의 계기로만 찾았던 것으로 보인다. 1930년대에 들어 탐험 또는 스포츠라는 개념의 등산이 도입되어 조선산악회를 중심으로 많은 사람이 지리산을 찾으면서 금강산과 함께 지리산 국립공원화 논의가 본격화됐다. 물론 무산됐지만 이런 논의 자체가 지리산의 자연자원이 우수해 국립공원으로서의 가치가 충분했다는 점을 뒷받침한다. 이 문헌을 통해 100여 년 전의 지리산을 둘러싼 시대적 상황을 제대로 알아야 지리산의 현주소가 보이고 지리산국립공원의 미래를 설계할 수 있을 것으로 본다.

영문 초록

This study examines historical background surrounding Jirisan Mountain by investigating literature related to Jirisan (four documents) written by Takenoshin Nakai who was a botanist in Japanese colonial era and staffs of imperial universities who were involved in the experiment forest. A vegetation distribution map of this document confirms the fact that Pinus densiflora forest, Quercus mongolica forest, and Abies koreana forest in the mountainside or from approximately 400 and 700 meters above sea level have been preserved well. This study has a significant meaning in terms of vegetation study because comparison of the vegetation in Jirisan between present and a hundred year ago can reveal the development process of vegetation. On the surface, the installation of experiment forest in Jirisan by the imperial universities was for forest conservation and research purpose. However, the original purpose of the university was to pursue additional economic benefit from the management of the experiment forest. Local residents had adapted themselves to the environment in Jirisan over a long period of time and managed their life based on the benefits that Jirisan gives, such as gathering of lumber and forest product. Restriction on entry to Jirisan Mountain because of the sudden installation of experiment forest must have felt as a persecution to the local residents that forced the change of lifestyle. At the time Nakai collected plants (before 1913), Jirisan was an object of worship and ordinary people did not enter deep into the mountain. Only some Confucian scholars visited the mountain seeking mental and physical cultivation. People began to think mountain climbing as a type of exploration and sport from the 1930s. As growing number of people, mainly those from Korean Alpine Club, visited Jirisan, debates for creating Jirisan National Park, along with Geumgangsan Mountain, began to develop. Although the debate foundered, it provides supporting evidence that Jirisan has value high enough to be designated as a national park with its rich natural resources. Dwelling on the historical background surrounding Jirisan a hundred years ago through these paper documents will make understanding of the present state of Jirisan and designing of future Jirisan National Park possible.
