국문 초록

전세계적으로 다수의 코로나 19 백신이 개발 중에 있으며, 이는 기존의 신약개발과 다른 속도와 방식으로 추진되고 있어, 본 연구는 코로나 19 백신개발 기술혁신과정을 살펴보고 그 특징과 시사점을 분석하였다. 코로나 19 백신 개발의 전 과정을 분석하기 위하여, 개발이 완료된 백신 3개에 대해 기술혁신의 원천, 소요기간, 정부지원 및 민관협력에 대해 보도자료, 임상시험 기록 등을 통해 조사하였다. 분석 결과, 코로나 19백신의 개발자는 기존 대규모 제약기업이 아니라 생명공학기업과 대학내 연구조직으로 나타났으며, 코로나 19백신의 개발기간은 일반적인 백신개발기간의 1/10인 평균 11개월으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과, 새로운 혁신 의약품 및 백신의 공급을 위해서는 대학 연구조직 및 젊은 창업기업의 지원이 중요하며, 공중보건위기 시기에서 백신 및 치료제 공급을 신속하게 하기 위한 민관 협력이 필요함을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the innovation characteristics of newly developed COVID-19 vaccines as many COVID-19 vaccines are being developed around the world, which are being promoted at a different speed and method than the existing drug development. To analyze the entire process of developing a COVID-19 vaccine, the source of technological innovation, required period, government support, and public-private partnership were investigated through press releases and clinical trial records for three vaccines that have been launched. This study found that the developer of the COVID-19 vaccine was not a large-scale pharmaceutical company, but a biotechnology company and a research organization within a university, and found that the development period for the COVID-19 vaccine was 11 months on average, which is 1/10 of the conventional vaccine development time. This study suggests that support from university research organizations and young start-ups is important for the source of innovative medicines and vaccines, and public-private cooperation is necessary to expedite the supply of vaccines and therapeutics in times of public health crisis.
