돌봄은 ‘덫’인가 ‘피난처’인가?

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 돌봄 문제를 안고 있는 20~30대 기혼여성들의 일에 대한 개인의 인식과 경험을 분석하는 것을 통해서 성별 분업의 문제점 개선 방안을 제시하는 것이다. 가정에서의 성별 분업 특히, 돌봄과 가사의 주체라는 여성의 위치가 여성들이 ‘기대하는 일’과 ‘실제 할 수 있는 일’의 틈을 키움으로써 여성 노동의 딜레마가 계속되고 있다. 따라서 이 연구는 돌봄을 수행해야 하기 때문에 타협할 수밖에 없는 현재의 일에 머무는 20~30대 기혼여성들의 ‘현재 상황’과 ‘미래의 기대’ 사이의 간극에 주목하였다. 사례의 여성들이 말하는 일은 ‘현재 가능한 최선의 일’과 ‘미래에 기대하는 일’로 나누어진다. ‘현재 가능한 최선의 일’은 현실적 제약의 다양한 요건들로 인해 더 많은 분절의 형태를 보인다. 현재 그들에게 가능한 최선의 일은 육아 때문에 시간이 제한된 상황에서 선택한 시간제 생계형 일이지만, 자신들의 품위를 지킬 수 있는 일을 찾기 전까지 그 일은 ‘한시적인 일’에 머문다. 여성들이 말하는 미래에 기대하는 일은 일 자체를 ‘노후보장의 조건’으로 규정하거나, ‘멋진 엄마, 당당한 와이프’가 되고자 하는 꿈을 반영하고 있다. 즉 현실적으로 도달 불가능한 현재의 일이 미래에 기대하는 일로 투영되어 현재 상황과 다른 결을 보여준다. 이렇듯 여성들이 인식하는 일을 통해 돌봄은 현재하고 싶은 일을 못 하게 발목을 잡는 ‘덫’이 되기도 하지만, 만족스럽지 않은 현재의 일을 하는 자신을 정당화하는 기제인 ‘피난처’로 작동하기도 한다. 그래서 사례의 여성들은 돌봄 때문에 일을 못 하거나, 이 정도 일밖에 못 하지만 정규직의 만족할만한 일자리를 얻을 수 있다면 지금이라도 돌봄을 박차고 나갈 수 있다. 이런 양면성은 현재 경제활동참가율의 ‘M-커브(M-curve)’의 가장 하단에 분포하는 여성들의 ‘굴곡진 속마음’을 잘 보여준다. 그동안 기혼여성의 경력단절이나 불공정한 지위에 머무는 현상에 대한 사회 구조적인 분석의 연구는 많이 이루어졌지만, 심층 면담을 통해서 기혼여성 특히, 비교적 젊은 세대인 20~30대가 가지고 있는 일에 대한 인식을 직접적으로 다루는 연구는 많이 이뤄지지 않았다는 점에서 이 연구의 의의가 있다. 결론에서는 연구 사례들을 바탕으로, 신자유주의 질서 속에서 여전히 지속하는 성별 분업의 불평등성을 개선하기 위한 실질적인 사회적 대안을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the experiences and perceptions of the work of married women in their 20s and 30s who are experiencing care problems. Through this, I would like to suggest a way to improve the gender division of labor. Among the gender division of labor in the home, in particular, the fact that women are the subject of caring and housework makes the difference between ‘the work of present’ and ‘the work of future’. Because of this, the dilemma of women’s labor continues. Therefore, this study focused on the gap between the ‘current situation’ and ‘future expectations’ of married women in their 20s and 30s who are staying in their current jobs because they have to perform care. In the meantime, many studies have been conducted on the social structural analysis of the phenomenon of career interruption or unfair status of married women. However, there have been few studies dealing with the perceptions of married women, especially the relatively young 20s and 30s. This study is meaningful in that it studies it through in-depth interview cases. The work of women in this study case can be broadly divided into ‘the work of present’ and ‘the work of future’. ‘The work of present’ is divided a lot because of the various requirements of practical constraints. Representatively ‘the work of present’ is a part-time livelihood job that is unavoidably chosen in a situation where time is limited because of care. ‘The work of future’, which women say, defines work itself as a “condition of retirement security”. Or, there is an expectation of becoming a “nice mother, a proud wife”. In this way, for the women in the case, work becomes a ‘trap’ that prevents them from doing what they want to do now because of caring, or becomes a ‘refuge’ representing the present work that they are not satisfied with. This duality shows the ‘double inner mind’ of women who are distributed at the bottom of the ‘M-curve’ of the current economic activity participation rate. In conclusion, based on the research case, I present a practical social alternative to improve the inequality of the gender division of labor that still persists in the neoliberal order.
