로마시대 젠더 이데올로기 속에서의 초기교회 여성 리더십에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

초기교회에서 여성 리더십이 존재함에도 불구하고 기독교 역사는 항상 여성을 억제하고 배제시키는 방향으로 흘러왔고 이런 흐름은 현대의 기독교 가운데도 지속되고 있어서 여성 지도자들에 대한 불평등적인 대우는 여전하다. 이는 초기 기독교 시대부터 여성 리더십의 활약을 통해서 초기교회가 성장하였음에 불구하고 여성들의 참여에 대한 의도적인 왜곡 및 삭제 가능성에 대한 역사적인 인식이 필요하다. 초기기독교는 로마시대의 아리스토텔레스의 이분법적인 젠더 이데올로기 속에서 여성리더십의 역량을 사적인 공간에 제약하게 되었고 기독교가 제도화되면서 그나마 초기교회에서 허락된 목회적인 여성 리더십은 교부 신학과 더불어 억제되는 방향으로 흘러갔다. 특별히 가부장적인 로마시대의 젠더 이데올로기에 영향 속에서 현재 많은 여성 리더십 가운데 사도들의 사도라 불리는 막달라 마리아의 사도권 논쟁의 경우에 기독교 역사 속에서 여성 지도자들에 대한 경계와 억압이 역사적인 왜곡 및 삭제 등의 형태로 나타날 수 있음을 보여주고 있다.

영문 초록

From the early Christian times, in the midst of the presence of women leaders, the Christian history has directed to oppress women’s leadership in the pastoral ministry. Even though the early Christianity was grown by the contribution of so many women leaders’ commitment, the church intentionally omitted their participations and/or distorted their roles and images as well as it developed church structure in ways to limit women’s leadership authority excluding ordination of women and their roles in some church ministries. Especially, the dualistic gender hierarchy in Roman gender ideological system strongly influenced on shaping the patriarchalization of Christian church as the church began to be institutionalized in the early centuries. The early church fathers who were uncomfortable with women’s leadership used their writings to oppress women in ministry. The case of Mary Magdalene’s controversy over her apostleship is a great example of gender oppression practiced by male leaders in early Christian times. Many feminist Christian historians recently rediscover her leadership capacity as the apostle to the apostles and the possible conflicts over her apostleship led by other male leaders such as Peter and Andrew in early Christian times that led her image distorted among Christians. With this historical consciousness, it is important to recognize that this oppressive gender ideology continues to maintain the unequal treatment of women’s leaders in current Christian ministry.
