The Parable of Minas in Luke 19:11-27: A Parodied Parable of the Roman Imperial Patronage System

국문 초록

본 논문은 누가복음의 ‘므나비유’ (눅19:11-27)가 어떠한 함의를 갖고 있고 누가는 이 비유를 어떻게 ‘청자’들에게 제시하고 있는지를 탐구한다. 서사비평의 한 관점에서 본 논문은 이 비유가 누가본문의 ‘상호-엮여짐’이란 특징을 이루어 내는 데에 공헌하고 있고, 전체 누가 내러티브 전개전략에 한 중요한 부분을 형성하고 있다고 본다. 누가의 ‘(예루살렘을 향한) 여행 내러티브’의 끝부분에서 이 ‘므나비유’는 누가가 처해있던 로마제국 안에 편만했던 ‘후견제도(사회-정치-경제적 ‘지배-종속’관계)’를 풍자하고 있으며, 그에 대한 대안적 비전을 예수와 관련하여 제시하기 위해 한 중요한 기초를 놓고 있다. 본 논문은 비유 안의 ‘귀인’ (the noble-birth king)은 로마의 ‘후견제도’와 같은 사회 체계와 관련하여 볼 때 누가복음의 예수와 대립되는 이미지의 인물로 이해되어야 함과 므나비유 자체 안에 이 ‘귀인’과 제국적 ‘후견제도’에 대한 패러디의 함의가 내재되어 있음을 논증한다. 다양한 수사적 장치들 – 예를 들어 반복법, 평행 기법, 역교차기법 등-은 비유의 ‘귀인’ 이미지를 예수와 양립하기 어려운 대립되는 모습으로 드러내는 데에 효과적으로 사용되고 있음을 보인다. 누가복음 서문(눅 1:1-4:13)을 비롯하여 다른 여러 본문들과 이 ‘므나비유’ 사이에 여러 차례 핵심적인 ‘문학적 밀착성’(coherence)가 발견되는데, 이는 이 비유가 누가의 세상적 ‘후견제도’ 에 대한 대안적 비전과 밀접하게 연결되고 있음을 강하게 시사한다. 누가복음을 하나의 전체로 듣고 패러디된 이 비유를 듣게 될 때 ‘청중’은 제국적 ‘후견제도’와 관련하여 누가가 제시하는 예수가 어떤 분이신지를 그리고 어떻게 하나님 나라의 ‘다리놓는 작은 사람’들로서 예수를 따를 수 있을 지에 대하여 보다 명확히 이해할 수 있었을 것이다.

영문 초록

The paper explores what implications the parable of minas retains and how Luke presents the parable to the Lukan audience. From a narrative perspective the paper shows that this parable is woven into Luke’s tapestry and forms an integral part of his overall narrative strategy. At the end of the travel narrative the parable of minas sets an important foundation for Luke’s alternative vision of the prevalent socio-economic patronage system in the Roman Empire in a parodied way. The paper argues that the noble-birth king in the parable should be understood as a counter image to Jesus in relation to the Roman imperial patronage system and the parable itself retains a connotation of parody. The author observes various rhetorical devices, such as repetition (with variation), parallelism, chiasm etc., which serves effectively to reveal the image of the noble-birth king as a counter image to Jesus. Several key coherences between the parable of minas and the other related discourses in Luke, from the prologue to the parable of minas, show that the parable is intimately related to Luke’s alternative vision to the worldly patronage system. By hearing Luke’s Gospel as a whole and the parable addressed in a parodied way, the audience could have understood who Jesus is in relation to the imperial patronage system more clearly and how they follow him as minor mediators of the Kingdom of God.
