신약성경에 사용된 헬라어 부사적 분사의 화용적 의미 결정에 대하여

국문 초록

본 연구에서 필자는 부사적 분사가 주동사와 가지는 다양한 의미(시간, 원인, 양보, 목적, 결과, 수단, 방식, 조건)를 살펴보고자 한다. 헬라어 문법학자들은 주동사와 가지는 분사의 부사적(혹은 화용적) 용법은 어휘, 시상, 통사적 관계, 논리적 관계와 문맥 등에 의해 결정된다고 주장해 왔다. 논문은 이런 주장의 타당성은 부분적이라는 점을 지적한 후 현대 인지언어학의 연구 결과물 중의 하나인 틀의미론(frame semantics)으로 전통적 문법이 가진 약점을 보완할 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 학자들 사이에서 부사적 의미의 결정 요소로 합의된 문맥을 언어적 정보(예. 공동 본문, co-text)와 비언어적 정보(예. frame)를 포괄하는 개념으로 정의 내린 후 분사의 부사적 쓰임의 의미를 파악하는 데 있어서 틀(frame)과 공동 본문이 어떻게 도움을 줄 수 있는지를 보여주고자 한다. 논문의 주된 주장은 두 가지다. 첫째, 분사와 주동사 사이의 화용적 관계는 주동사와 공동 본문에 의해 환기된 틀 안에 있는 사건들의 원형적 관계의 도움을 받아 이뤄진다. 둘째, 틀 안에 있는 사건들의 원형적 관계는 언어 사용자의 머릿속 인지 모형으로 저장된 것이지만 그것의 사용과 의미는 명시적 담화 정보에 의해 통제를 받는다. 따라서 분사와 주동사 사건의 화용적 관계 이해는 담화 정보에 의해 환기된 틀 지식이 공동 본문의 통제를 받아 진행된다. 환언하면, 부사적 분사가 주동사와 맺는 관계의 의미는 언어적, 비언어적 정보에 기반한 추론의 결과이다. 논문의 공헌은 두 가지이다. 첫째는 담화의 미시구조(낱말, 절, 문장, 문단 등)를 이루는 항목 중의 하나이자, 헬라어 문법 중 가장 많은 의미적 요소를 가진 주동사와 분사로 구성된 문장(a sentence)의 의미 이해를 돕는 언어학적 기초를 제공한다는 것이다. 둘째는 한국어 문법에는 없는 분사를 번역할 때 원문의 의미에 보다 상응하는 번역어를 취할 수 있는 이론적 기초를 제공한다는 것이다.

영문 초록

This study is a research on the pragmatic meanings of the adverbial( circumstantial) participle which may imply time, manner, means, cause, purpose, concession, condition, etc in specific circumstances. It has been generally acknowledged by Greek grammarians that the meanings of the adverbial participles in relation to its main verbs depend on lexicons, tense(verbal aspect), syntactical and logical relations to main clauses and context. The article will point out that such an understanding is partly correct, and then make up for the weak points in traditional understandings on the basis of frame semantics which is a semantic theory of cognitive linguistics. For this purpose, first of all, the study will attempt to define into linguistic features(co-text) and extra-linguistic features( frame) the so-called context which has been believed to play a core role in deciding the pragmatic meanings of the adverbial participle, and then demonstrate how various co-texts and frames evoked by main clauses and immediately preceeding discourses help understand the pragmatic meanings. My argument is threefolded. Firstly, the pragmatic relation between participles and main verbs may be illuminated by the help of prototypical relations of events in frames evoked by their co-texts and the actions of main verbs. Secondly, although the prototypical relations of events in a specific frame are stored as cognitive models in language-users’ mental dictionary, its use and relational meaning may be constrained by explicit information uttered in discourse. Thirdly, the understanding of the pragmatic relation between participles and main verbs may be processed on the basis of the frames opened by main clauses and its preceeding texts and co-texts. The contribution of the study is divided into two parts. One is to provide the New Testament grammarians with a linguistic theory of comprehending a sentence which consists not only one or more main verbs and participle, but also one of the micro structures(word, phrase, clause, sentence, pericope and paragraph) of discourse. The other is to supply any future Korean bible translator with a theoretical basis for the translation of a Greek participle which has no corresponding grammatical unit in Korean grammar.
