마녀사냥의 정치학

국문 초록

이 글은 역사적으로 실제 발생하였던 인류의 집단적 광기의 역사라고 말할 수 있는 마녀사냥의 몇몇 사례에 대한 역사구조적 원인분석을 통해 그 의미가 내포하는 진정한 의미를 되새기기는 것이다. 다시 말하면, 이 글의 목적은 종교개혁시기의 유럽에서의 마녀사냥, 20세기초 미국의 청교도주의에 의한 인종적 마녀사냥, 50년대 중반 반공을 위한 매카시즘, 그리고 21세기 테러리즘에 대항하는 외교적 일방주의에 의한 팩스아메리카나와 같은 네 가지 사례를 가지고 다양한 형태의 박해를 가한 것을 탐구하는 것이다. 그 과정에서 당대의 정치경제, 사회문화 혹은 종교적 헤게모니를 가지고 있는 지배세력은 대항 지배세력 혹은 피지배세력에 대해서 특정의 목적을 달성하기 위해 특정의 부정적 사회현상을 인위적으로 조작하거나 확대해석하면서 마녀사냥을 전개하였다. 이러한 분석을 통해 도출할 수 있는 소중한 부산물은 인권의 의미이다. 그러나 그러한 희생은 개개인에 한정되는 것이 아니라 그가 속한 가족, 사회, 나아가 민족국가의 발전에 심각한 장애를 유발하는 경향이 있다. 특정의 역사적 時空의 집단의식에서 나타나는 다양한 형태의 광기에 대한 직접적 희생자는 개개인이다. 이런 의미에서 오늘날 인권의 개념은 보다 더 포괄적인 인간안보의 개념으로 확대발전하고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper is to think over a real meaning of some historical witch hunts through the historical-structure analysis. In order words, the aim of the paper is to explore the various oppressive structures which led to bring about witch hunts such as European witch hunts in the Reformation, racism by American protestantism in the early 20th century, mccarthyism against anti-Communism in the early and mid-1950s, and pax-Americana as a diplomatic unilateralism toward anti-terrorism in the 21st century. In that process, this paper addresses how the main dominant sector with various hegemonic power built up the logic of witch hunts against the counter-dominant sector, falsifying as well as overemphasizing with intension a negative social phenomenon in order to achieve a particular goal of the former. We have to rethink the meaning of human rights as a crucial byproduct of such analysis. It were individuals that fell the direct victim toward the various acts of sheer madness turning up from consciousness of group hysteria which was revealed in a certain time and space of the historic scene. However such victims are inclined to trigger a serious obstacle for families, societies, and national development, as well individuals. In this meaning the concept of human rights, today, spreads throughout human security as a further comprehensive concept.
