한국노인의 노년기 조망과 세대규범의 성찰성

국문 초록

본 연구는 65세 이상의 남녀 노인에 대한 심층면접을 통해 한국노인이 생애시간과 노년기를 어떻게 조망, 해석하는지, 세대규범에 대한 해석과 의미화는 어떠한지를 분석하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 통해 현재한국사회의 전형화된 노인담론에 대해 문제제기를 하고자 하였으며, 총 13명의 노인을 대상으로 심층면접을 진행하였다. 분석결과, 연구참여자들은 노년기 삶의 의미를 적극적으로 해석하고 이를 실천하는 주체적인 행위자임을 알 수 있었다. 대부분의 연구참여자들은 노년기 삶에 대한 긍정적인 의미를 발굴하고자 노력하고 있었으며 이는 남은 생애시간과 현재 삶의 조건 및 사회적 상황을 해석하고 의미화한 결과임을 알 수 있었다. 연구참여자들은 생계, 일, 부양, 미래 등 젊은 시절에 중요했던 가치와 의무에서 벗어나 자아실현, 관계, 현재 등의 가치를 바탕으로 노년기의 삶을 해석하고 있었다. 노년기는 자신에 좀 더 집중할 수 있는 시간인 동시에 이웃, 친구, 배우자 등 가까운 사회적 관계가 중요해지는 시간이었다. 또한 이러한 노년기에 대한 해석은 세대관계의 가치적 차원인 세대규범에 대한 해석 및 의미화와도 관련이 있는 것으로 보인다. 연구참여자들은 세대갈등에 대한 회피적 전략을 보이기도 하였으나 세대규범에 대해서 성찰적으로 사고하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 대부분의 연구참여자들은 현재의 사회적 상황과 시대의 변화를 인식하고 이에 따라 세대규범을 재규정하는 모습을 보였다. 이러한 결과는 쇠락, 우울, 의존, 고집 등으로 의미화된 노년기 및 노인에 대한 사회적, 학문적 시선에 성찰이 필요함을 함의한다. 앞으로 노년기에 대한 다양한 의미발굴이 필요할 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

This study aims to investigate how Korean older adults aged 65 or over perceive and interpret meaning of old age and intergenerational norms through in-dept interviews. 13 older adults participated in our interviews. Our results show that older adult interviewees actively interpreted meaning of old age and sought to practice their interpretations. Most interviewees tried to find positive meaning of current life in old age, which was based on their perceptions and interpretations of time-horizon, current life conditions, and social structure. Interviewees valued self-fulfillment, social relations, the present rather than family support, work, and the future that were more important when they were in younger age. Old age was a period for which one could focus on self more than ever before, and close social relations such as friends, spouse, and neighbors became more important. Interviewees also showed reflectivity of intergenerational norms, which means that older adults redefine intergenerational norms based on current social environments and intergenerational relations. Our study suggests that we need to reconsider socially stereotyped images of older adults, involving negative connotations such as decline, depression, dependence, and obstinacy. It would be required to investigate variations and heterogeneity in meanings of old age in Korea.
