38도선 이북 일본인의 식민지･귀환 경험과 기억의 표상

국문 초록

1945년 일제패망과 함께 일본으로 귀환한 재조일본인은 전후 일본사회 내에서 자신들이 가해자가 아닌 피해자라는 ‘기억의 역전’ 현상을 거쳤다. 그리고 이는 전후 일본정부의 태도와 정책에 힘입어 일본사회 내에서 ‘공적 기억’으로 자리 잡았다. 여기에는 38도선 이북지역 일본인의 ‘잔혹한 체험’과 ‘고난의 탈출’이라는 귀환 경험이 그 결정적인 계기가 되었다. 하지만 이 글에서 대상으로 삼은 이소가야 스에지라는 인물은 이와는 정반대로 일본사회 내에서 이러한 집단기억에 맞서서 정부와 시민사회를 향해 끊임없이 책임과 반성을 촉구했던 귀환 일본인이다. 그가 남들과 동일한 고난과 역경의 귀환 경험을 가졌음에도 불구하고 피해자 인식에만 갇혀 있지 않고 오히려 ‘공적 기억’에 저항할 수 있었던 배경에는, ‘유일한 비국민 일본인’이라는 그의 남다른 식민지 경험과 기억, 그리고 일본인의 귀환 활동을 주도하면서 겪은 민족과 국가를 뛰어넘은 동지애와 신뢰가 자리잡고 있었다. 그는 죽을 때까지 일제의 식민지배와 침략전쟁 그리고 전후의 한반도 분단과 그 고착화에 일본의 책임이 크다는 날카로운 지적을 끊임없이 일본사회에 던졌다. 귀환 후 자신의 경험과 기억을 정리한 이소가야의 저술들 속에서 강력하게 흐르고 있는 공통분모는 바로 휴머니즘이라는 가치였다. 그의 식민지 및 귀환 경험은 남다른 특수성을 지니고 있었다 할지라도, 전후 일본사회에서 그것은 휴머니즘이라는 지극히 보편적인 가치로 발현되어왔다.

영문 초록

The Japanese, who returned to Japan in 1945 due to the defeat of the imperial Japan, went through a reversal of memory phenomenon in post-war Japanese society that they were victims, not perpetrators. And it has become a public memory in Japanese society thanks to the postwar Japanese government s stance and policies. The return experience of Japanese people in the north of the 38th parallel, the brutal experience and the escape of hardship , served as a decisive opportunity in the process. However, the person named Isogaya Sueji, analyzed in this article, is a returning Japanese who constantly urged the government and civil society to take responsibility and reflect on the collective memory in Japanese society. Despite his experience of returning to the same hardship and adversity as others, he was not confined to the victim s perception, but rather resisted the public memory, his extraordinary colonial experience and memory as “the only an unpatriotic Japanese”, and his comradeship and trust beyond the people and countries he experienced. Until his death, he constantly threw sharp criticisms to Japanese society that Japan was responsible for Japan s colonial rule, invasion war, and postwar division of the Korean Peninsula and its entrenchment. The common denominator that flows strongly in his writings, which summarizes his experiences and memories after his return, was the value of humanism. Although his colonial and repatriation experience had particularity, it has been revealed in Japanese society as a very universal value of humanism.
